TA 1.96 Bug. Thalians are my allies but they attacked me

The title says it all. I'm playing the humans on normal difficulty.

I made an alliance with the Thalians and then a few turns later I proceeded to attack another civ.

After the Thalian attack, I check the diplo screen. They are still listed as allies.

Is this a known issue?

You aren't flagged At War with them correct?

Also, let me guess on how they attacked you. A troop transport got sent to a planet you had just recently (past week) invaded/culture flipped? The AI does all it's moves when you are. Graphically you see their ships move after you hit the turn button. Both you and the Thalans had the great idea to invade this planet...

I've seen this happen for a long time, but I don't foresee how it's fixable. I've sent in some save games in the past, but it's really hard for me to replicate it perfectly.

Did they hit a planet that you had just captured? It is known that the AI doesn't recheck the ownership of a planet once it sends its transports off, so if they were already en-route when you took it, that would be why.

No. I had some ships sittig near their border and they attacked my ships out of the blue.

The other civ I attacked was far away from any Thalian ships/territory.

I didn't capture the planet I attacked, so I don't think it's the transport issue.

And those ships weren't just bought or acquired via a surrender?

No.

Ok, one last REALLY long stretch. Did perhaps an opponent's freighter pass through the parsec where your ship was in and perhaps the AI accidentally got sent to attack you?

Yes, that stretch would make Mr Fantastic ache. Sounds like a bug to me.

I think the same can happen if you happen to park ships on one of their waypoints before they get to it, as well.

Since I was so close to their border, I think the "waypoint" suggestion was probably it.

I've been playing GC2 in all of it incarnations since the beginning, and I have never had an ally attack me under any circumstances. This is definitely a bug.

Thanks Guys!

In all honesty, I can't claim I've ever seen that happen, I'm just offering a possibility. I HAVE had invasions, though. Usually due to change of planetary ownership, and occasionally from peace treaties (make peace with them, and a transport still hits your planet a few turns later).

This just happened to me.

I am humans.
EARTH got invaded by Iconians.
I have never been at war with ANYONE.
I am still not at war with the Iconians after the invasion.

Version 1.96

Perhaps this isn't a bug. That, because they attacked without provocation,I should now declare war on them.

Now THATs a game that should be submitted to support@stardock.com

Zip it up along with the debugg.err of that session if you still have it and send it to that address with a description of the problem.

Influence flips, invading another race's world, new world entirely...all these things I've seen this happen to if I take it and the AI has a ship enroute to take it. I've never seen a static world get invaded w/o a war declaration.
