Can't install WB 6.1

"Missing" WbSrv.dll - but it's there!

WB somehow disappeared from my computer (HP laptop running Vista) so I went to SC to reinstall. Tried installing WB 6.1 (the latest version showing); it got 75% through, then said Missing WbSrv.dll. So I installed WB 5.5 with no trouble (and that dll is now in the correct directory), shut down the computer, went to bed. This morning, tried again to install WB 6.1. It got a lot further through the installation, at least the log file is a lot longer, but eventually gave me the same error. Doublechecked, the dll is in fact in exactly the directory that the error message claimed it wasn't.

I wasn't able to find a downloadable version of WbSrv.dll (thought I'd try replacing the one I have).

Any ideas on how to solve this?

thanks...

(I know that most people also post a list of what their computer is doing, but I don't know/can't remember how to get that, sorry!)

Simple thing to try first would be uninstalling the software, restarting, installing with Impulse instead of SDC, then restart again before using the software at all. If that does not change a thing then please let us know at support@stardock.com if you haven't already.

You can get Impulse from here: http://impulsedriven.com

OK, this is getting frustrating...

I went back to it a few days later, and was amazingly able to install via SDC. Rebooted as directed, WB6 came up fine. No problem.

The next day, turned on the computer, got the "This computer MUST be rebooted before this program will work! (referring to WB6)". Rebooted, got the same message. Hmmmm...

Uninstalled via SDC. Rebooted. Downloaded and installed Impulse (what a cool program!). Rebooted. Reinstalled WB6 (and a few other updates). Rebooted. Got the "reboot this machine" message. Hmmmm. Had Impulse "check" the installation - said it wasn't installed correctly. Uninstalled. Turned off everything I could think of (virus checkers, firewall, etc.). Reinstalled. Turned off the machine as it was getting late.

This morning, turned on the machine - got the "reboot" message again.

Argh!

What next?

thanks...

The "reboot" thing is usually associated with the trial version. It's a symptom that the trial time has run out. Did you uninstall the trial before installing the full version?

This makes me wonder if there's not a problem with the computer instead of the software. Software can't just disappear.

I think that's your best bet.
