How do planets link?

Well, in the given example below, I have 3 planets, my home planet and two others that I colonised. I may have missed this in the tutorial, but the total income rate of all three resources don't add up to the total of the output of the three planets. I did notice that the numbers are red in colour, then I realised that it might be a logistical upgrade, can anyone guide me on how to "link" the planets so that the total resource rate actually adds up? In the upgrade panes for each planet, you'll need to upgrade the population capacity (top left, innit?) for the numbers to go non-red and thus start making you money.
