You will want to first go to Start->Start Search and type services.msc. Once there, be sure the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service is running and the startup type is set to automatic.

Let me know if that does not work for you.

I hate to say this while working in support *deep breath* Haven't seen that one before.....

Try turning off the service then restart your machine. If you get the excat same issue with the service running but Deskscape after the restart please email us at support@stardock.com because we will need more info from your machine.

I am having the exact same problem on my new laptop. My old computer was running Vista 64-bit Enterprise and Deskscapes worked perfectly fine, but with the XPS M1730 laptop I have I'm getting the same error the above guy is getting, and this new laptop is also running Vista 64-bit Enterprise. Restarting the service also did not help.... Any advice?

You can also see this error if Desktop composition is disabled.  To enable it the easy way, make sure that you have the Windows Vista theme enabled.  To do so:

-Right click on your desktop, choose personalize.
-Click on Themes
-From the drop down menu, choose 'Windows Vista", then click apply and ok. (If you have WB themes applied, you can reapply them later)

If that still does not allow you to display .dreams, please try the following:

-Click the Start orb
-Right click on Computer, select properties
-In the tasks pane on the left, select 'Advanced system settings'
-Click the 'Settings' button in the 'Performance' section
-Check 'Enable Desktop Composition' from the list
-Click 'Apply', then 'OK'
-Click the 'Settings' button to be sure that is still enabled. If it is not, please go back and make sure that the Vista theme is set by the instructions above.

Time for me to test the waters... I have run into this situation a number of times and the following has always worked for me (ususally the problem arose after doing numerous installs and/or un-installs, for whatever reason)

Go to Start and type in (without the quotes) msconfig and doubleclick on the .exe entry.

This will bring up a screen of various options, the one you want is Services... once you click on it you will be given an amazing view of running services on your machine... by scrolling down approximately 3/4 of your screen you will find DESKTOP WINDOWS MANAGER SESSION MANAGER. In all likliehood your system will indicate STOPPED and the checkbox will be empty. Click on the checkbox to enable the Desktop Manager to run. Click on "Apply" and exit... one last thing if you run dual or quad core sytems, click on Boot, Advanced and once on that screen, check to see how many processors are enabled... click on the checkbox, pick your processor total (Core i7 choose 8, for example), click OK, exit, click "Apply", exit and reboot... with luck you will boot a little quicker and Deskscapes should be running normally...

Hope this helps,
