Star Assault opens in partial window and wont start play...

I just bought and downloaded a few days ago the new Star Assault game.  I have installed and ran it from both impulse and stardock.  When it opens up it is in a 3/4 window and only a portion of what appears to be the game window is viewed.  After I setup a new character it should, I believe, allow me to start a game.  It doesnt allow me to press the continue game button.  I can access the other buttons for settings and such but again only a portion of the intended screen is shown.  I am on an older machine but it is well above the minimums requirements for the game.  Is there a fix for this problem?  I tried adjusting my screens display settings, but to no avail.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, didnt help.  Please advise.
