cannot install stardock central

Well I can install it, but it will not run.

I am having the following symptoms:

At the "Welcome to Stardock! to begin using stardock..." screen

Either I pick "i already have a stardock.net account" enter my account information and hit next and it hangs. If I hit next while it is hung it will instantly pop up the 1001 connection error warning.

or if I chose to enter my information later, the program goes to the "registration complete" screen and then hangs. There is a "finish" button, but it will not respond. I have to end task to get it to stop.

I am running 32 bit xp pro on a t42 thinkpad laptop

I tried uninstall/reinstall of SDC and repair of SDC

I am not running any security software and have the same symptoms with windows firewall turned off and the laptop in my router's DMZ

I saw in a similar thread the suggestion to clear cookies. I cleared my firefox cookies, that didn't help but I am not certain that is the sort of cookie clearing that was being suggested.

My desktop (running vista on the same router) runs SDC fine.

Suggestions?

You pretty much covered everything that is the general cause of a 1001 error. It sounds like something, anything is interrupting online processes. Instead of spyware do you have any popupblockers running? It sounds like SDC is running correctly but that something is simply getting in the way. Try eliminating all processes one by one and running SDC to see if you eliminate the cause.

Have you tried out Impulse yet?  http://impulsedriven.com/about.asp

Impulse is the next gen SDC.

I have Spyware Blaster installed, which passively disables some ActiveX commands (or something like that?) it is not a running process, but more of a HOSTS file filter (I THINK). Could that be the culprit?

I have not tried Impulse and will give it a look when I get home.

P.S.:

to quote wikipedia:

SpywareBlaster is an anti spyware and adware program for Microsoft Windows. SpywareBlaster blocks the installation of most ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers and other unwanted programs from the user's computer. SpywareBlaster works by blacklisting the CLSID of known malware programs, effectively preventing them from infecting a protected computer. This approach differs from many other anti-spyware programs, which typically offer the user a possibility to "scan" the memory of the computer and remove the unwanted software, after it has been installed.

SpywareBlaster also allows the user to prevent privacy hazards such as tracking cookies. Another feature is the ability to restrict the actions of websites known to distribute adware and spyware. SpywareBlaster supports several web browsers, including Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Seamonkey, and Flock.

SpywareBlaster is currently released as freeware, for non-commercial users. However, a feature called AutoUpdate is available for a price. The AutoUpdate feature simply checks for and installs any updates for SpywareBlaster. This feature is not included in the freeware due to the high bandwidth cost it causes.
