Man that sucks... :( Wish I could pass on my smooth sailing, I've never had a single mini-dump... no matter what version. Then again, I've only played a handful of online games, never have time to play online.

Could you include alittle more information about your minidump?
I've been creating a aqua-theme mod and I've yet to have a single minidump that I didn't cause myself or was unfixable.

1.05 actually solved my minidump problem and I have had no issues since. None have occured since patching and my minidumps were also occuring with BSOD problems too. All gone with this patch. Not sure what my problem was with 1.04, but everything I did did NOTHING...applying this latest patch, all fixed.

Just out of curiosity, is it Nvidia users that are getting these minidumps?

Because the only minidumps I've ever got was when I was purposely making the game crash to see limitations of modding it.

i have only started to have mini-dump issues since the 1.05 patch, im using a nvidia geforce 7900 glx to run the game.

Got minidump after 10 minutes of playing. No point to start playing again as the games will just crash.

Only ever had one minidump.
And that was IP based multiplaye rnot ICO.
The problem i found was Xfire.
Closed Sins, Closed Xfire, restart Sins, worked fine.

It could be a issue with SD/ICO it could be Xfire.. who knows. but that was the fix for me, just close xfire

Minidumps are not a type of primary causal problem with the game programme : they are secondary effects of a programme crash that can have been caused by a variety of problems (within the game code itself, or from the user's computer).

Minidumps do not cause crashes : they contain information to help the developers to find the real causes of crashes.

If you did not have minidumps, you still would have the crashes, but then, the developers would lack information to track the causes of crashes.

Consequently, a patch (such as 1.05) cannot eliminate minidumps : they are a technical tool, not a real problem by themselves (even though their appearance is very annoying).

It would be utopian to believe that 1.05 has eradicated all bugs and potential causes of crashes, especially since some crashes are caused by the user's computer.

No matter how many patches the developers release, there will always be minidumps, because you cannot expect that a software programme will run flawlessly on a complex diversity of computers.

On the other hand, I sympathize with people who cannot continue their ICO games because of crashes (not because of minidumps!). Patch 1.05 was supposed to reduce the frequency of some types of crashes. I cannot evaluate to what degree it was successful, but it is utopian wishful-thinking to believe that 1.05 has waved a magic wand and that all causes of MP crashes have been eradicated forever.

If you really want to help the developers, e-mail the minidump file (and your DX-Diagnostic info) to support@ironcladgames.com .

The minidump file is very useful information : it is not the lair of a mythic monster which causes your games to crash.

Minidumps do not cause crashes.


(This has already been stated on other threads, but I thought it was interesting to reintroduce the information for the benefit of those people who have not visited the older threads.)

I have never played a game that "minidumped" as often as this one. You also seem to think that it is the players obligation to help fix what the devs did wrong. A thorough beta testing would have decreased the issues. I fail to see how attacking someone, who is complaining about minidumps, helps the you fix the problem. Maybe writing a program, as an optional download, for those who are willing, to automaticly send the minidump info to you guys would be more of a constructive solution. Lets face it, we have all paid 40-50 dollars to help you finish your beta test.

I at one time had minidumps, but I started turning things off and soon realized that my HP printer monitoring software was causing some sort of conflict. I turned it off and Sins runs like a champ again. Could this possible solution help any of you guys?

You assume the devs did something wrong. In fact I believe most game issues come from the player side more than the dev side. People who know very little about computers will just assume its the games fault it crashed without ever investigating it and finding the real cause. Most of the time its an issue with drivers or something on the clients side.

Beta testing allows for early detecting of some problems. As you might know by the mixed replies in this thread this is not a 100% bug. It only effects a few people. If the few people it does effect refuse to try and identify exactlly what the causes are then there is nothing the devs can do.

Myself for example has never had sins crash. I have been playing it for a long time with multiple people. I have had several games that were 15+ hours long and myself and none of the friends I play with have ever crashed.

I second rekrn123. I think most of these crashes are because of issues on those people's machines. Have you turned off all non-essential programs and processes prior to running Sins? Something might be fighting Sins for resources causing the problem.

i have an nvidea 7600 and sins crashes prob 2 out of 7 times i play. i only play online and i know i am not the only person with this prob. IMHO, online would be about 7-10 times better if it did not crash constantly.

FOR EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT GET CRASHES AND LIKES TO BLAME THE PEOPLE WHO DO - please god stop blaming the people who get the crashes, how come every other game i play online works fine but this one does not? the 'i don't get crashes so you are a noob' attitude is extremely annoying.

this is a great game, but the MP needs work. i am actually pretty confident that ICO/Stardock will get it figured out. unlike a lot of other games, they actually patch which is nice. hopefully 1.1 fixes the graphics card conflict and internet connectivity problems.

Disagree. While it is easy to say its the fault's of peoples machines, why were there no minidumps in version 1.02 back at release when there were thousands of people playing the game online?

Its something thats introduced in the game in version 1.03 or 1.04 that started causing the minidump problem.

A good indicator is to look at the online population playing. Its ~ 100-150 now where as at release and for months after it before the minidump problem it was ~1000-2500.

So unless 95% of players have problems with their machines which is VERY unlikely, its the games fault.

It's normal for any game's online population to diminish with time.  There's also a heckva lot more new games out (GTA4, Ninja Gaiden II, etc.) there (in addition to summer weather) that will keep people offline. ;)

For people who are still having trouble, we can't operate in a vacuum with no detailed info.  Please zip up your minidump file, a dxdiag report for your PC, your save games that fail, and a description of the issue (with as many details as possible) and send it to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com.

Offer a place to upload minidumps easily. You have a place for maps , why not have one for dumps.

Finding the file,Zipping, Attaching,Sending email, ...It really is hard work for the average joe who just wants to play the game with no strings attached. The way it is atm ,its wrong to expect people to bother like this especially when minidumping itself has pissed average joe off. And yes they do find it easier to just post here complaining. Im right because this is what is happening everytime this issue crops up.

Sending a minidump in, is effort. There is no instant gain. Spending 3 minutes doing this is just not worth it. The majority cannot be arsed.

Its a complete lose-lose situation. People are pissed off because the game crashes and wont bother to send in dumps because it is effort,and stardock doesnt get dumps cant fix the problem. Stardock however are happy just to say its the peoples fault which isnt helping because this same problem has already cropped up several times.

Who is going to turn the lose-lose situation into win-win? The majority of people who are not going to put in the effort ,or Stardock by simply introducing an easier way of uploading dumps. Change a nation of apathy or have upload feature. Its either that, or Ironclad can try to figure a way to fix dumps without having the dumps.

Having a site to host minidump uploads wouldn't be any easier. You'd still have to locate the file (the crash popup tells you exactly where it's at), zip it, and upload it. The minidump popup can optionally open the email client at least, but even that's hit-and-miss due to widely varying configurations.

Additionally, even if it were automated, people would just complain about privacy issues instead and demand an option to disable it (set by default, of course, so people would still have to "do something" to report the crash).

It really doesn't take any significant amount more effort to email the dump than it does to post about it on the forums, yet I see people making post after post about how they refuse to send in a minidump because they don't want to make that little effort. It just doesn't make any sense.

We want to fix the crashes. We don't like them any more than you do. But the devs cannot fix random, sporadic crashes with any reasonable efficiency or accuracy without that technical info. With the info supplied in the minidump, they can home right in on the cause.
