Multiplayer Concerns

Whats going on?

Ok, i finally tried to play sins online. It was one of the worst online expiriences i've had in a long time. First off, i couldn't host a game (which i was okay with cuz thats wat happens in starcraft). Then, when i actually did find a game, 10 minutes into it the game crashed. Appearently this is extremely frequent in sins online. So frequent in fact, that players even gave it a nickname called minidumping, which is when the memory dumps itself and the entire game crashes. I tried 2 more times and it also crashed.

Now, at this point i thought it was just my computer. But when i went to the lobby i talked to about a dozen players and they all said that nobody can really play an actuall game. One player got so frustrated he swore he would never play sins again. Everyone else just tried to calm themselves down by talking about it must surely be fixed in the next patch! But 1.05 just came out and who knows how long 1.06 will show up. Ironclad, please fix your online gaming. Its scarring strategy gamers for life.

1. Please don't use CAPS in your postings to these forums, IT IS RUDE!

2. There is plenty of information in stickies (and many other threads) which covers all of your issues. Please use forum searches!

Your hosting issues can be resolved by following the steps in the guide I wrote Feb 14th/08 "Networking and SINS" and can be found linked-to from the very bottom of the "Technical FAQ" or my stickied thread in the Technical forum.

Alternatively, if you do not wish to be bothered with following the steps in my guide, there will be new optional netcode in patch 1.1 which will enable SINS to "tunnel" past offending routers/firewalls and should resolve hosting issues.

thanks,

the Monk

EDIT: Thank you for changing the title of your thread. :)

Just want to point out that the new netcode would probably use UDP (or possibly TCP) Hole Punching to allow inbound connections through a router/firewall.

I'm new and I haven't seen any announcement about it but this is what it sounds like it would be.

It's called NAT-T (Nat traversal) and yes there have been posts on the subject.

You're wrong to jump all over that guy. Hosting a multiplayer games of Sins is a bitch. I should NEVER have to look up info online in order to start a multiplayer game. Think about it. It's complete bullshit. This is a short-coming of PC games in general.

And if there is a technical solution (which it is not clear to me that there is in this case - firewalls are designed to keep programs from talking to the internet without permission), it should have been the first thing implemented - not something tacked on in some patch.

And who the **** cares if it is UPD or not. You shouldn't have to know about these things to play a multiplayer game. Anyone who says otherwise is just an idiot.

yes other MP games never have connection problems that's why usually a fourth of a readme document for the average RTS details port forwarding

I just wonder why Ironclad didnt add NAT-T in the first place.

Yeah I just expected the patches to cover it. I mean, I thought that ironclad was really trying to influence multiplayer so they can have a continuous fanbase. I think thats why there is only about 1000 people (my little guestimate) playing multiplayer. I dunno about you guys but i just get kind of lonely after a few hours of sins. Or am i jsut too emotional?  :SNIFF!:

You just have to take sins multiplayer at face value. Its not really World of warccraft in terms of devoting your life to it. Tho sometimes I feel ive devoted too much time to Sins multiplayer.

I wish I could have that thought of "too much playing". Honestly, I can't play more than a few hours on singleplayer. I'm gonna have to lower myself to the_monks little forum fixer *sniffle* but i doubt it will work considering not all people not multiplayer have followed his steps so I will probably get minidumnped. Yay!

Lol sorry I was a little frustrated that I have to tamper with my sins files just to enable a basic part of the game. It makes me uneasy since I got the download only game and it takes about 6 to 7 hours to reinstall

I regularly play MP games with a friend of mine where I host the game and he connects to my machine from his house. We just use port forwarding and it works fine.

The one problem we have run into is if we're playing a big game we can't reload it later because his machine will never catch up and it will list it as lagging even though his ping is like 29 ms.
