The new ground combat screen

Hello,

I still have not bought Twilight Arnor but its been on the TODO list. I was wondering could somebody pop a screen shot or two from the new ground combat screen. I know its a trivial thing, but the old was so ugly it left trauma or two on me :D

Thanks in advance.

Here a screenshot. In the middle you see the new invasion videos, on the map you see some blinking flags representing your troops (or something) and the planetary improvements that get destroyed in the battle. It is a matter of taste, i did like the old one as well.

Thanks for the pic! :)

Clearly the Terrans are going to win in that pic.

I sort of miss the old one since it reminded me of MoO days.

Although the new one is more streamlined and current.....

I even miss the sounds, to be honest, the little lasers on an electronic keyboard.... lol.

Ah well, don't mind the new one. There is simply no nostalgia factor

I like the old screen better. The new one is reminiscent of Stratego to me, and I think it lacks a certain "flavor" that the old one had.

The "new" ground combat screen is something you might have seen on a C64. A very weak effort.

Seen far worse ground invasion screens. Remember MOO3? :(

I think the top half of the new invasion screens are fine, but the bottom part needs work. I think that having an after-action report of which tiles were obliterated during the attack is a good thing, but for the actual battle you could do far worse than come up with an extended edition of the invasion video which plays the first time you land troops. There's already a skip button for those who simply want to see the results.

I think that it's a lot to ask, and it isn't up there on my must-have list of features. But then I seem to remember thinking the same about improved weapon effects mods, and having played TA I sure wouldn't go back to the old weapon effects. ;)

Brought this up before, but I would personally like a blend of the old and new. leave it as it is but add the "toy soldiers" back and give it a graphics revamp.

Wow.

I just bought the game bundle and after seeing screenshots of the original invasion screen I was, believe it or not, looking forward to seeing the old MOOII-style soldiers battling it out in all their tiny glory, but with slightly newer, fresher graphics in Twilight.

I've got to say, I'm immensely disappointed in this new "improvement".

Oh, well...

Lol! Harsh bro... Very harsh. You should boot up a c64 emu and play a few rounds of Defender of the Crown, you may just retract those hasty words. I actually felt sorry for it, it looked that bad, though Last Ninja 2 still holds up.

I think the new screen is a big improvement overall but instead of flags in the bottom portion of the screen I would have rather seen icons representing tanks or ships shooting at each other like in the game defcon. I think that would have been fun to watch and not too taxing on your system. ie.http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/802997/defcon/images/defcon-20061020045418098.html

I don't see how 2-3 little flags and a high pitched repetitive noise is an improvement over a screen that showed soldiers and tanks battling it out against each other in battle. It'd be nice if there was an option to revert back to the old battle screen.

yes the new screen got old quick. I liked the armies pounding on each other.

Well, it's not like anyone has the time to sit through every single invasion.
I actually skip them all... and have enabled instant battles.

Nope, watch them all and as the number troops decreases know in your mind that is thousands of billions that will never see their families again.

Its kinda crazy that you have to eliminate the entire planetary population before retiring your soldiers into productive citizens (ie: taxpaying breeders). I'd like to see a planetary invasion that makes sense. Of all 4x games ive played, MoO3 had the most 'realistic' one. It was ugly as hell, but your soldiers would fight the world military, plus some militia, and some citizens would die from colateral damage based on the invasion method you picked, IIRC. Better than just 'kill 8 billion, take their homes'.

Yup. MoO2 also had specialized troops doing the invading (and defending), rather than a total mobilization of planetary populations. Which makes sense, since MoO2 also had conquered populations assimilating. Not sure how MoO3 handled things, since I have found myself unable to tolerate that alleged game long enough to learn much about it.

I do like the updated look of the new screen, but I agree a little more action in the window(like the old battle scene with updated gfx) would spruce it up nicely.

My ultimate wish would be to adopt specialized ground troops ala MOO series/Star General. It would be great to give them RPG stats as well and you name them and let them earn experience and levels (similar to ships) to provide the "reward" to the player.

In the meantime, I do like the top part of the new invasion screen, but I think the bottom is pretty poor compared to the original one. I say keep the top and replace the bottom with the original soldiers/tanks battling it out with sound effects.

Just a quick question. In that screenshot you can see some sort of drop pods (??) being smashed into the planet, in the video screen.
But every single time i invade or get invaded, its the same old video of a city burning more and more..

I tought it would change depending on what invasion method you use, mass drivers or core detonation etc. (would be REALLY cool) But it just doesnt.
Is it supposed to be the same all the time? Or is it a bug that will be fixed?

Thanks!

I too would like to see a more beefed up ground invasion. With specialized troop’s graphics showing up as you research them and some sort of graphic showing that you have the Tir Quan centre. Call it nuts but I am sure that I am not in the complete minority on wanting to see graphics as you conquer and annihilate your enemies :)

I think that seeing different alien graphics as you fight on an updated old invasion screen fusion with the new one would rock this game…
