Ai fleet at start

Why is it that when I start a two player (me Vs Ai) game, by the time I have built my first scout, which would be maybe a minute, the Ai has already a huge fleet of scouts and already some battle cruisers?? I thought we would start of th same.

You do start the same - the neutral ships around all the planets are not AI controlled, they are always there and attack anyone who enters that planet's gravity well. ;)

Yes, the 'gray' ships are either pirates or neutral ships that guard planets. The purpose of the neutral ships is to keep people from colony-spamming at the beginning of the game. First you have to build a capital ship or a small fleet in order to be able to take out the defenders on those planets. Notice that, in general, more desirable planets have more defenders. Terran planets will have the most, then desert planets, and so on.

It's usually a good idea to go after asteroids first since they have the fewest defenders and can jumpstart your economy a little bit faster (since you don't have to slog through a small fleet just to be able to colonize it).

It is really not so obviuos that the grey ships are not of the same color than that of your AI opponents?

Somebody should do a "SOASE for Dummies" guide and post it here in the forums (or a link). It seems it will really help some of the new people get into the game.

I'm working on one actually.. but with my limited MP experience, it might end up being written by a dummy :P
