Can't Connect With New Version

I've submitted a support ticket and emailed support, both to no avail, so I figured I'd try posting to the board...

I can't seem to get Multiplicity to connect no matter what I do.  It was working fine before, and I always use it, and I'm pretty computer saavy.  I recently reformatted both my systems, so we're dealing with a fresh install of Windows XP on both machines.  It seems to be the new version of Multiplicity because the older one worked fine before I reformatted.  Windows firewall is off on both machines.  The only thing I can think of that I did differently is that I have a windows login password on both systems in order to access shares on another system running Server 03.  The login and password is the same on both systems though and they both have access to each other if I \\run them.  I can access the shares fine.

Multiplicity sees the slave machine, but when I try to connect it fails every time no matter what I do.

same here

have a look if the service is running

when you say sees , do you mean it detects it's resolv name? or do you mean you can telnet to the multiplicity port from he primary?

also do a netstat -n -a on the secondary to see if porrt 30564 is in a listening state.

While i'm waiting for a solution i added an old harddrive to the computer that's not working with the new version , and am installing vista on it as i speak. when the problem gets fixed i'll just remove it so i can use xp64 again.

If you get anything going or have any ideas , keep me updated, i'm interested .

Kind regards

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try it and let you know what I come up with. It "sees" the other system in the sense that I can detect it's network name and resolve its IP, but when I actually hit the ok button and it tries to connect it gives me an error. Could most definitely be a port issue, but unless the old version of MP ran on a different port, I don't see why it would suddenly be different.

Sounds like a bad install of the program. Uninstall on both machines - install again doing the slave machine first with no password to be used. It will not matter if you have a windows password or not. Install the master and configure the slave without a password. If it connects and works. Do a restart of both systems and edit the slave first to use a password and then the master. The password does not have to be the same as your windows password being used.

Reinstalled in said order, and still no dice.

As for the other post about the ports. I ran a netstat, and you're right. 30564 is not listening on the other machine for some reason. Multiplicity is loaded, but the port is not listening.

Ok, on further investigation, on the primary machine I have the Stardock service running. For some reason, the installer doesn't want to install the service on the secondary machine. Unless the service isn't supposed to run on the slave? But I would imagine it would need to to listen.

What anti-virus or firewall are you using?

Yes , the secondaries are in fact servers in the true sense of the word. they accept connections from a client running on the primary .. the service should be installed on the secondary and running.

also , did you check your listening ports with (netstat -n -a) on the secondary like i asked some days ago ?

there should be a line exactly like this in the list:

TCP 0.0.0.0:30564 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

if nothing is listening to port 30564 on the secondary , it can't work.

Like MiStACoRn saw, my MPP secondary is not listening either. I've uninstalled and reinstalled both primary and secondary and at this point the troubleshooting wizard sees no problem. How do I make MPP 'listen'? Using Process Explorer, the only Multiplicity program I see running is multipl.exe on both the primary and secondary machines.

Thanks,
Mark

Update: I meant to add this. Both machines are XP SP2. The secondary is a fresh install and these two computers used to work together.

No antivirus or firewall. Even Windows Firewall is turned off. Netstat says that the service is NOT listening. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times.

I am having this problem too - the service is not being installed on my secondary machine. No matter how many times I restart, reinstall and switch between primary and secondary mode, the service does not get installed and the program does not work. Both of my machines are Vista x64. UAC and Firewall are completely turned off on both.
Any help is very much appreciated

Did you install Multiplicity via a standalone installer, SDC or Impulse?

End of quote

I installed via SDC for both primary and secondary.

Working with Stardock I was able to get it working. I had the issue where Multiplicity was not listening. They sent me a link to a batch file that reinstalled the Multiplicity service. I asked them so here is the link: http://sd.stardock.com/mike/apps/reinstall_mpp_service.bat

Hopefully it will work for you too.
