Pirates in game?

Pirates add a lot of spice to the game, but often times (especially when you are microing your fleet) it is difficult to focus on putting bounty on players, or even notice that the pirates are about to leave their base.  Also, adding bounty on large multiplayer games often relies on "convincing" ALL of your team mates to add arbitrary amounts of bounty and for all of your allies to focus on the bounty for a little bit simultaneously.  This is diffucult, especially in multiplayer games with people you don't know.

As for me, I like pirates in small 1v1 and 2v2 games, but in larger games they are annoying.

Alright SO this is to satisfy my curiosity, but

Pirates are a very irritating factor. Why not make a new unique faction instead of this medieval-like neoromantic crap "pirates"?

The most lame things in pirates:
- you can pay them off with "bounty"
- they are overpowered, one asteroid can maintain like 50-60 pirate ships
- they are magnetically drawn to razing planets and buildings (esp. trade ports) instead of fighting my ships there (LOL).

I like pirates. Just bought the game a few days ago and I'm still learning. Been doing a lot of researching to see what works and what doesn't. Personally I like Pirates a lot because I play TEC and have loads of $$ around all the time so I have insane bounties on all the opponents.

Based, on ever ones answer, they want one of two things.

1. They would like it, if the Pirates, would act like Pirates
2. For the Pirates to have a capital ship.

So why not give ever one both worlds. Add a Pirate capital ships that acts like a Pirate, while keeping the old system the same.

Here my ideal, for the Pirate capital ship.

Pirate King(a good name that is some where in this post)

The Pirate king, is a mobile ship yard that builds free pirate ships, based on the amount of resources that it steals while being a Pirate. The ship goes next to a non military ship, and disables it. As long as the Pirate King is not forced to move, it gains money. It can use that monet to build other Pirate ships, to protect it.

Pirates add a great aspect to the game. Sometimes i have so many credits i dont care if i spend a few to harrass my enemy. i do think , like the post above, that you should be able to control them more,so u say ill give you this much money, this is where i need you to attack. I think they should be more of a bidding thing, so whoever bids the most actually gets to control them but has to pay the whole amount for the attack to happen. I like them even more in large maps with many players cause if u put bounty on random players (i usually send them to the best players to slow them down) it starts bounty wars where people think its a certain person giving them bounty when its just me instigating it. Yeah they are good, but could be much better.

I find Pirates annoying. Good idea, but maybe with some different\additional implementation. As GoJoe2400 said, it would probably be better with secret bids. I also think it would be better if Pirates acted more like Barbarians in Civ4 - can take control of your cities(planets), and have multiple bases. I think of having an endless supply of pirates, they should be conquerable, and mid-game or so you should see them taper off or basically get wiped out.

I like them, in multiplayer games they soften up the "third wheel" enemy that I'm not concentrating on, making said enemy easier to handle when the time comes.

As a new player, I dislike pirates. The issue is that they distract me from learning what I need to learn to get through the build-up (early) phase of a single-player game. I might turn pirate attacks back on once I'm comfortable with the game UI, tech tree mechanics, and build-up strategy.

I like the concept, but disagree with the naming. Pirates should come in, take what they can and run before the navy arrives, so maybe they should be renamed to mercenaries or marauders or money-guided-kamikaze-screwups.

I love pirates for only a little while vs the AI. Once I get my TEC super weapon I build two of them and take out the pirate base so that I don't have to deal with them any more.

They are fun to sick on oppenents and once in awhile have them attack a different person then who they were attacking.

I played against 3 computers today and had the pirates attack the same person for the better part of 3 hours until I could bring a force to bare against them.

I like pirates but wish they would make up their mind who they were going to attact when the countdown reached 0 instead of waiting for more offers. It never fails that they are trying to make their decision when I am in the middle of doing something else and it seems to take forever.

You know the more I look at it, the pirates in the game, act like privateers. Privateers, are pirate that are supported by an government, and act much like mercenaries with less control.

see wiki for the following infomation on privateer

The costs of commissioning privateers was borne by investors hoping to gain a significant return from prize money earned from enemy merchants.

look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privateer

What, no other votes or ideals to improve the pirates, in the game?

WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO PUT BOUNTIES ON THEM... MISERABLE PIRATES. GIVE THEM A TASTE OF THEIR OUN MEDICINE. I WONT MIND BIGGING ON WHO GET TO COLLECT THE BOUNTY OF THEM.

Only thing I hate about them is when you turn them off, though they don't leave their area to attack, they're still there. I started one game in a map I slapped together...and got screwed. There were three pirate bases all randomly placed that blocked my way to my sun when I only had 4 planets. That's a real game killer.

Otherwise, I think they're OK. It's nice when you have extra credits and can't have more ships or you're waiting for something and want to harass your enemies.

I generally host with them off - what IS funny is that the game allows you to bid even if they are defeated/inactive - people don't look at the shattered portrait and heap credits on them for no benefit. I do tend to ally chat to let MY team know they are off....

I like pirates because it adds a dimension to the game which is unpredictable, even for experienced players. They have their problems but hopefully they will get fixed in the future.

If they'd just make it so you had a one minute warning, and the pirates left when the counter hit zero, then it'd be fine IMO. Or else make it wait 5 seconds after the last bid. Something standerdized, as is you can lead and lead and lead in the bidding war, and then they up it, and before you can respond they launch. Pirates are fine as an idea, the stupid countdown/launching system is not.
