Key Rebinding Needed

I love GC2 to death, but after I switched laptops, I found to my horror that it lacks anything analogous to a mouse wheel. I can't zoom in and out at all, a problem that also exists in other games.

I would hate to play a Huge or Immense galaxy at default zoom. If there is no way to rebind, I need a mod for it. ):

Perhaps a USB (real) mouse connected to the laptop would be the easiest sollution?

You should be able to zoom using the -/= keys.

In case the -/= keys don't work well for you, there are external programs that should be able to rebind the zoom functionality to something else. I haven't tried it with this game, but AutoHotkey should work.
