How to get the "Pirate Baron" achievement

So I built a massive fleet and destroyed the Pirate Base. I then saved and quit the game. I didn't get the achievement award for colonizing the pirate planet (Which was actually a big asteroid). I colonized it after I had beaten the other team, so I'm wondering if I have to defeat the pirates while still in the campaign and not playing out after winning?

That's correct: You don't get achievements for anything done after the enemy is dead.
