Focus fire for fighter squads

Heres a situation that  always gives me a little trouble:

In countering LRM's I usually end up juggling about 12 - 25 fighter squads, amongst 50 - 100 or so other craft.

Now, once battles get to a certain size, or a game to a certain length, you will usually see a little of everything in someones fleet.

With that said, i want my 20 or so squads of fighters to go after my opponents LRM's:  using the SHIFT + attack, i use the empire tree to SHIFT + attack 3 or so stacked groups of LRM's (all done through the empire tree).  10 seconds later, i see that half of my fighters are off chasing bombers and my focus fire goes to hell.  Am I only imagining that the whole SHIFT + "action command" is not consistant in battle?!

How can someone more effectively focus the fire of their fighters when it seems that a fighters natural behavior is to be going after squads of bombers, or other fighters? Is there a way to specify the "type" (lrm/bomber) that you want your fighters to focus fire on?

(if not, it would be a hell of an addition)

Thanks for all responses!

Are you just doing a plain attack initially, and then shift + attack for all extra commands? If you do shift + attack from the beginning they may just be wanting to finish killing their current target before they start following your commands.

I think the problem is using the stacked empire view. You SHIFT click three stacks so they kill one unit from each stack and then goes back to choosing target themselves.

Try using the unfolded one instead and click each unit you want to kill individually, I know it's a pain... but don't think there's any way around it... yet.
