Best way to join a ship to a fleet?

So i have a couple of ships, and i have a fleet, i want to join those ships to the fleet i have.

At the moment i've noticed i can select the fleet and the ships and just press the "Create fleet" button again, and they will create a new fleet, but i've noticed this causes odd things to occur like a scout ship being assigned the fleet leadership when i have 3 capital ships in there.

I have read this post https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/?forumid=402&aid=176810 and it explained the auto-join ability in quite alot of depth which was helpfull but not directly related to my question.

Just wondering if it was better to make them all leave their fleets first, before making a fleet from them or not? And is there a way to change which ship is the leader of the fleet?

How do you manage your fleets? What do you think the best way is?

I try to grow my fleets as much as possibly by rallying ships to them directly from the factory. But if want to change them at all, you're right funny things can happen if you just create a fleet again on top of the current one. It seems safer to un-fleet and re-fleet with the new ship, it's a hassle though.

When you have several ships selected they have these semi-transparent white circles around them, right. Well one of these will be more opaque (i.e. whiter looking), that's the "leader" - so if you don't have a fleet yet created, that's the guy that's going to be the fleet leader. You can switch the leader ship (before creating the fleet) by pressing shift+tab (I think, it was in tutorials, can't remember 100%). I haven't tried it but it's possible that even if it's already a fleet you can switch the leader like this and click the fleet button and it will reform it under new leadership.

To be honest I never encountered the issue like you described above, at least with already formed fleets. Whenever I select a fleet and then use shift+mouse drag to select more ships I always end up with the fleet leader remaining the leader and so when I click create fleet the ships are just added to it.

I did notice that usually when rubberband selecting a cap ship always gets to be the leader, the only times I didn't get that is when I specifically selected some other ship first and then added the cap ship to the selection.

Anyway, I think I'm babbling here, I hope this helped. :)
