Advent Mothership Mechanics

I have a question regarding the Advent Mothership and how the colonize ability and the game mechanics related to it.

Lets say I jump into a system kill the 2-3 pirates and colonize the planet.  That planet then gets the 20% reduction in upgrade costs.  Then I jump into another system, wipe out a larger pirate force and my Mothership levels up and the cost reduction increases to 40%.  I then colonize the 2nd planet.  Does the first planet now get the 40% bonus or only the second and subsequent ones?

What I'm getting at is, would a person be better off sending the Mothership around to get a level quick before colonizing asteroids to get the upgrades, or are the planet upgrade cost bonuses retroactive?

The bonus is only temporary, kicks in after a 30 seconds delay (don't know why. during these 30 secs the planet draines 2.3credits/sec, resulting in more than 60 wasted credits), and the first planet will stay at 20, until the effect is over then it has no more a bonus.

Thanks for the info. How long does the effect last? It sounds like one might be better off stockpiling up some resources to Queue up a bunch of upgrades before the bonus wears off. Is there a visible timer on the individual planet?

Anyway, I appreciate the info. I'm still a noob to this particular game and school is coming down hard so I no longer have the time to play test everything in depth the way I'd like. Infact I sent my gaming computer to my brothers place to keep the grades up. Otherwise I'd play Sins all the time.

No timer, but hover over the ability to see the times. They do go up as you level the Colonize ability. I think it starts at 240 or 360 seconds. In the early game there is no sense waiting till you have resources or levels to colonize. You need the mines and logistics spots more than you need to maximize the benefits. But in mid game it certainly is worthwhile to have stockpiled resources. As soon as the ability kicks in, you'll see the price drop, then queue up all the upgrades you'll want on that planet. So long as you buy them during the effect, the price is locked. Can be 10+ upgrades on a desert planet that needs tac spots, but its cheap as hell with a 60% Colonize skill.

It's useful early game mind you. Crystal is always in short supply, and buying it becomes way to expensive. What you CAN do though is take out any and all seige frigates in the GW, THEN colonize, then head back to kill cobalts, whatever. This way, while combat is happening, you not only can deal with them, but wait for the ability to kick in and upgrade asap, saving you a good minute or two, depending on the NPC fleet.
