Strategy question: DPS vs gun positions

Advent illuminators do 16dps. have guns on front and sides,  Do they do 1/3 dps on each side?  Anyone know exactly how that works out?

Also, i know its off topic compared to the question in general, but how does armor work as well? Illuminators have armor of 2, TEC LRM have 1, what is the damage difference based on equal dps?

Illuminator damage is evenly divided among the three arcs, yes. Armor effectively adds 5% HP per point, but more important are the armor types versus weapon types. That is covered in this chart made by SierraBlack:

Thanks that answers both my questions. I already knew about damage armor type, but i was concerned that if armor boosts changed armor types from light to medium if over a certain threshold, but it doesn't.

What about positioning? If I attack a capital ship from a certain angle, like the rear, is there any sort of damage bonus? In many games that's the case.

No. Ships are either within a weapon's firing arc, or outside of it. They are either shot at, or not shot at, there is nothing in between.

is there a way to find out what that range is? Could the front and side overlap if your diagonal with the enemy?

each arc has an angle of 90 degrees (could be under 90) from what I could tell from the tests (it wasnt testing arcs specifically, but other aspects) and thus the arcs cannot overlap.

Basically

.......V

K.......T

K will be hit by V right arc and T will be hit by V front arc, thats if V has weapon/s on the right arc and front arc and is facing downwards.

If you select a ship (or ships) and hold down Alt then you'll be able to see it's range.

90 degrees? Shouldn't that mean 45 degrees to either side of the perpendicular? Missiles, with their turning capability and turn rates should also, technically, have a wider fire arc.

Is it true that if the illuminatior only fires one beam/laser it deals full damage rather than 1/3 of its total damage?

Not that I'm aware of--if it does, I'd say it's a bug. Damage is per-bank, unused banks do not pool damage into ones that are firing (that would make no sense at all and defeat the purpose of having banks).
