taken planets revert to neutral

after taking planets of a broken opponent, the planets i took reverted back to neutral when i clicked on them to upgrade and add structures.  bug?

maybe; the opponents i was playing were advent but all their planets in the system were empty. all they had were construction drones as i and my ai ally had decimated their fleet into oblivion and i was planning on breaking the alliance and destroying him next but i was held up taking planets and all of a sudden, i won...

Culture takes a while to dissapear, especially if you don't have capital ships there. Culture can cause your planets to 'rebel' and revert to neutral.

Most likely thing anyway.
