Did Sins Steal Sound Bytes From Another Game?

I smell potential lawsuit?

I'm unsure if this was brought up already or not, but while playing TEC today I realized that two sound-bytes were copy-pasted from Starcraft.

They are:

The guass defense turret - Sounds like a Terran dropship picking up/dropping off troops
Shield generator - Sounds like a protoss shield generator

I actually went and played starcraft immediately after and confirmed, they are indeed the same sounds.

My question is.. was this intentional?  Is this legal?  Are the soundbytes for sale on the internets?

All in all, kind've disappointed newer sounds weren't found &/or used.

They are probably the freely available sounds mentioned in the credits:

Starcraft may just have used it too.

Yes, if you point your ears at it, you will notice many sounds being utililized multiple times across different games and even movies.

This only goes to show you that, yes, as the human race gets older, originality will continue to approach zero. Eventually, our great x 10^10 grand children will live in a world where no one will ever have an original thought, see an original television program, or be to an original place that hasn't been thought, seen, or been to before. Scary thought, eh?

The movie Smoking Aces used doom samples during the big battle enounter with those nazi guys, I got a chuckle out of that.

Yes, there are some stock sounds used. At least we don't have any Wilhelm Screams, though ;)

That would make the game more fun in my eyes.

It would be neat to hear that from the TEC every time you eliminated a TEC AI player.

You should've used a Wilhelm. That would've been awesome.

I can't tell you how many times in movie trailers and commercials I hear Doom/Doom 2 sound effects (the elevator noise, the level 30 "monsters are appearing" noise). Oh, and the X-Com menu selection "bloop" noise. That thing's everywhere.

There are only so many ways you can make something sound. Just think about it, how many original ways can a door closing sound? Or something whirring up? Controlling the pitch and frequency to distort it slightly isn't very original :P Originality has limits when the concepts are so basic.

A thought is original if it is new to you and formulated by you. It's previous forumlation by another individual is meaningless.

So sure, eventually given an infinite period of time, all thoughts will be forumalted, but as mankinds mind is not infinite, there will always be a sense of originality, I wouldn't start worrying for that reason.

Realistically thoughts aren't new in anycase, they're mearly recognition of how something works (ie physicality being observed and paired together with another part of physicality).

An image on your computer is composed of pixels made up of 3 hues controlled by 256 layers of darkness each. So in a sense there are only a limited number of images possible.

But I still don't find myself getting bored.

Shame on you. This is what happens when you use too many stock sounds. :)

Ugh! The Wilhelm Screams!!! My ears pick up on that like a cat hearing a tin of wet food opening. Except instead of arousing my hunger, my spine shivers as if Edward Scissorhands decided to scratch his back - and by "back" I mean a chalkboard.

Yeeeeaaaarrrrggghhh!!!! Hahahaha! Thanks for that, kyro :)

If you're using stock sounds, how can you resist using the Wilhelm?
