Delete the .bik files...er...

In the manual, there's a tip that the game will run on older computers if you delete the .bik files. I thought this a bit strange (wouldn't the game just crash when it couldn't find the file?) but as I have a Pentium II at home (III at work but...) I thought I'd try it. I went through all the directories sticking the .bik files in a subdirectory.
Not a success. When I click on "Start New Civilisation" in the opening screen, it hung, playing music but not responding to any prompts, and I had to hard-boot to escape. Doeas anyone have any ideas (apart from 'buy a new computer' :-) )?
As a matter of interest, the game ran quite happily before with the .bik files still there until I colonised a world. It gave me the colonisation movie, but after I clicked 'close' for that it froze.

Leave the open menu .bik alone. Most of the others can be hidden. I tried different ways of deleting and it alway hung up, so I left those .biks along.

I think that all of the other places except for the opening menu don't care if the bik file isn't there. The menu is a little more dependent on them, though.
