Strategy Thread

OK, it seems like there isn't a big thread near the top to discuss strategy. There's lots of strategy sprinkled here and there, but I'd like to hear some people's general strategies to winning. Include your difficulty levels and any changes you make to alignments, and your general picks for governments and bonuses. Also needed will be galaxy size and planet viability.
First off, I warn you: I am not a high scorer, and generally don't submit scores to the Metaverse due to the internet connection I have. And I don't like games where I get off to a fast start. I like being the underdog.
My choice for government varies, but I generally pick either the Technologists or the Universalists. I go with Tech bonus of 50%, while spreading the rest of my points on 1 cost choices such as +10 Population or +25 Luck. I pick small or tiny, with rare or uncommon planet habitability. I play Painful difficulty with In rare cases, I'll end up with a habitable world on Sol or a close by yellow star. I CTRL-N these because that's too much of an advantage with a small galaxy and rare world setting. On the first turn I crank up millitary production to 60% with the others at 20%, and keep it that way until I've colonised as much as I can. I see no problem in colonising any 14 or 13 quality planets, since they can be upped to 15 with early enhancements. I tend to pick all good choices, except for the planet quality ones, where I get as evil as sin. I research Defenders ASAP, and turn them out at a steady turn, not so much because they are worth anything but because I need to have SOME millitary against the Drengin and Yor threat, and occasionally the others as well. I then turn to researching trade techs, and build Sol into a hyper trading site, throwing out freighters in all directions and trying to keep everybody happy with me. Inevitably, someone delcares war on me, since I never have the millitary capacity of my neighbors. By then I hopefully have researched Battle Hammers or even better Battleships, because if else, I'm toast. I ally with whomever I can, make them declare war on one friendless enemy, and eliminate every threat to my species one by one when I get Dreadnought tech. I win (in the rare case I win) by either cultural dominance or allied victory.
How about y'all? How do you play this game? Any tips to people?
