Happy Meal?

One of the things in Korea that is really popular is the idea of the combo meal.   Combo anything really.    Buy something get something free or at a discount.     The only difference is that instead of calling them combos, they are usually called "sets".   That's cool.   You order your burger set, you get the drink and potatoes as well.    Easy, right?   This can apply at other restaurants as well, where your set might have an entree, appetizer and drink all included.   No problem.

We went into TGI Fridays the other day in search of a real burger.   (Fairly successfully, I might add.   They over-cooked it, but it's the closest thing to a real burger I think you can get in Korea)

Anyway, leafing through the menu, we are introduced to the idea of drink "sets".   One of the specials was two massive margaritas.   I'm thinking "Boy you've got to be pretty unstable if you're going to do both of those for dinner"   Or unstoppable, I guess.

But the king was this one.         "Hmmm...I think I'll have the fifth of cognac and the salad, please"

Heather and I laughed so hard.   I'm sure the concept was to share it, but still the idea was amusing.

That's a "Really really Happy" meal   Wow, I doubt we'll be seeing that in the US except possibly in New Orleans or Vegas

Ah, the Korean happy meal... I remember it well... Never had this one, but I have had some that were similar. We once had the 8 liters of beer and massive plate of french fries. When I say massive, I mean, the whole bag of fries you get in the frozen food section of a grocery store, probably 2 to 3 pounds of fries and one little Wendys cup of ketchup.

One thing you have to be careful about in Korea with these types of meals is that in a lot of places (mostly private/local establishments - not the foreign chains like TGIF's), the owners/managers will pick up after the parties and 'recycle' the unused alcohal. Very often, they will take cheap liquor and pour it into an expensive bottle and reseal it. Then they will sell it as if it's Hennessy, or whatever. There's been a big crackdown in Korea by the police this past year to catch people doing just that.

My favorite part of that ad is that not a single word in the whole picture is Korean . The Korean printed on the bottom are just the English words spelled out in Korean letters.

Actually, you can find this sort of thing in many Korean clubs here in the states. Any place with a sizable Korean population will have clubs or cafes that are owned by Korean - Americans and they will have deals like this. They are meant for groups of friends to share. Mostly it's for drinking together while picking at the food.
