Where can I get the update patch in a file?

OK, easy but not perfect solution: if you go to the downloads on the GalCiv page there is the 1.02/bonus pack standalone patch, download that, put it on a zip/CD, stick it in your laptop your laptop and update it that way.

If you really want to have the latest patch and assuming that SDC can actually validate a serial number without being online (what I'm guessing your limitation is), here's what you need(ed) to do:

Install SDC on your laptop and use the software registration feature - this may not work without an internet connection, and if not, I don't know what to do. But if it does...

Next time there's an update on SDC, don't just update your desktop copy automatically, but right-click the update and choose "download and archive".

It will put a zip of the latest SDC patch in the "Backup" directory of wherever you have SDC installed. To then patch either of your copies (you'll have to move the zip into the "backup" directory for SDC on your laptop) got to 'archive' entry in the File menu and select restore. Point the dialogue at the patch and you should be good.

Caveat: even if everything else here works, I'm not positive if the archive feature will download everything needed to go from 1.00 to 1.03054, or whether it just downloads what is needed to go from 1.03053 to 1.03054.

Maybe someone who does know can chime in to supplement these instructions.

Well, archiving an update will indeed let you update any version - since it downloads the core game completely updated - i.e. if you don't have cable or DSL, probably not a viable option since the update for 1.03054 comes in at about 88MB

The update, yes, the archive, no, unless I missed something in the "download & archive" option.

Personal I'd like it in a file as well.

Due to my present situation I've only got a dial-up and it may be months, or longer, until that changes. 80+ Megs is a bit much without a download manager, and I've got no proof SD central has that.

Secondly, I've got a POS box for my Net connection, and my games machine is a seperate, better, box. Should something bad happen I can rebuild the POS in a night, not so with the games box, so I'm not planning on connecting the games box to the Net. Without being able to download the patch into a file I'm stuck at .02. Very disappointing as I've only had the game a week and .02 made such a huge difference. (I was starting to think I'd wasted my money before I'd updated).

If you wait, the stand alone patch wil be out next month and you'll never have to go through the birth pains of 'tiny patch-> discover new glitch -> tiny patch' cycle.

It has been covered ad nauseam why the patching process is this way and why it's not going to change. You're still getting stand alone patches more frequently than with almost any developer I've ever seen.

It's as if you'd be happier if there wasn't an option to get incremental updates through SDC. Even though objectively the non-SDC users aren't missing out on anything relative to any other game out there, just the idea that there is a non-standard way to get mini updates has people crying for a dev, a dev that's already given them far more than the market dictates as necessary, to work even harder to give them something more for free.

Want mini-updates, you use SDC, warts and all. Want stand alones, you wait a couple of weeks for the whole build patching process to complete, and even benefit because the SDC people have done the play testing for you.

I have no problem waiting, but until you said something I had found no info, ad nauseam or otherwise, stating that was all I had to do. Believe me I'm quite happy with what SD is doing, and I want to continue to see where they go. Which is why I was asking about a stand-alone file. If you know of another way to do a multi-part download over a couple of days, and end up with I file I could move over a network to install on a box other then the one I downloaded to then tell me.

Since you misunderstood what I was saying I'll include a more direct version.

I can not use SDC to patch my game. I need a stand-alone patch. If I have to wait, that's fine. Post that on the website download page. GO STARDOCK!
