Fist of John Fist of John

What are your star naming conventions?

What are your star naming conventions?

Anything beyond 5 plants get had to keep straight with names thought up by others. Fortunaly we can think of our own, here's mine:

Being that my empire is the FIST OF JOHN I name my systems as follows:

Largest Planet size in System 15-19 I rename to Finger Finger1, Finger2, etc..
Largest Planet size in System 14-under I rename to Knuckle Knuckle1, Kuckle2, etc...
Largest Planet size in System 20+ I rename to Fist Right Fist, Left Fist, Cock Fist, etc...

Any systems with generally worthless planets I use for hunting good/evil events or as a tradable resource get demeaning names like "Throw away pet", "Throw away pet Stepchild", or "Babbling drooling Retard".

So what are your Star naming conventions? I'm curious to see what some of you use..

I don't really mind if the Solar System doesn't come out exactly the way it is in the real world, and that Mars can end up in a different orbit.

You guys know that there is a star-system name file you can modify or replace? I'll leave its name and location an exercise for the reader.

Ya, I know, but SOL isn't in that list. And you can't name the planets... So it's rather pointless really...

I name all my systems after the Pern series of books. Pern obviously gets a nice planet. Then I have Rukbat, Ruatha, Benden, Bitra and Telger.. and names like Menolly and Lessa, etc.. and then dragons, such as Ramoth, Canth, etc and so on. That series was all about colonizing a planet and their struggle to get back on track to what the original colonists wanted as a life on Pern.. so I thought it would be cool.

3 systems in one sector -
Zoom, Schwartz, and Pafigliano
-and / or-
Manny, Moe, Jack

2 systems one good, one not so good
Homestar, and Homsar (www.homestar.com -check it out if U don't get it)

Largest systems in my empire -
Megatokyo, New Babylon, Gotham

Shipyard worlds:
New Brooklyn, New Alameda, New Norfolk

The Obligatory Dantooine / Tatooine / Alderan /Hoth - but nothing from that steaming pile of crap called Episode one or after.

Crappy Planet names
Felgercarb, New Paris

And for the rest, whatever pops into my head. Whenever I conquer a planet, I usually leave the name as it was, because by that time I've gotten used to seeing it there.

I use lots of different names/theme for games (cities, countries, eclectic) but the main thing is I always go alphabetical... the first system will be A something, etc... 'cause late in the game I have a heck of a time remembering where a system is... but if I know R-something is probably a new conquest, that helps immensely.

It's also my way of making finding the system that I need to launch a reloaded transport from (if only they'd let transports max out by themselves, grr)

My naming list:

MATTONIA - used to be Sol
DAVONIA - main military production system

After that: Woremed, Glory, Jondd, Shoot, Shoot, New Shoot, Ferr, Enlie, Hepa, Jadul, KalManDaa, Lafser, Sosai

(you get serious cool points if you know where those systems come from)

Then: Heinlein, Lazarus, Lorelai, Lapus Lazuli (and so on)

On a big map I name the first colonies (close to sol) agter family members. I add compass points to later stars.

I use the naming system from the Honor Harrington series by David Weber for the home systems. Manticore, Sphinx, Gryphon...

I use planet names from Star Wars books, and sometimes obscure characters' names from the books. For instance I liked the name Tarkin so I used that even though Tarkin was not a planet. (If you're a Star Wars fan you can tell me who Tarkin was and which book he was in, but be aware it is quite obscure.)

For my starbases I use Greek alphabet: Starbase Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta...

In my latest gigantic game I am an evil Sith lord ruling with an iron fist. The galaxy is trembling with fear even as we speak... MUAHAHAHA

I name my systems after US cities, depending on their location.

For example, if I have a high PQ planet in the northeastern part of my empire, I'll name it New York. A small planet in the southeastern boonies I name Key West. Midwest planets get midwest names, Topeka, Omaha, etc.

This naming system lets me know exactly where the systems are in my empire when they build something, need something, etc. It also helps if I see a fight going on (I have the 'see AI ships moves' on) I know what it's near if I can catch a glimpse of the system names nearby.

....just wish I could get my wife that Princess Leia Slave outfit in ROTJ but getting her to wear it would be the next hardest thing...

The hardest thing being the result, of course.

I name the planets after the members of my family in order in which they were born then move to names of our pets then onto names of my closest friends then the names of the NASA Space shuttles. That's good for about 50 names. I have this order written down so I use thesame order every time. This helps alot because you usually know and early name has better social production than a latter acquired plant. Also, I always draw a map of the galaxy and show the names of my planets and where they are in the galaxy. This helps a lot when trying to decide what Millitary to build for a specific planet. I wish they would show you on the screen where a planet is when it steps you throught the turn start sequence of Build results.

I do Battletech names too - my civilization is "Star League," and I go for the Inner Sphere capital planets first (Tharkad, Luthien, etc.), then major planets, usually depending on the number of the planet being colonized. For example, I hold off on "Hesperus" until I'm colonizing a system's second planet, and I wait for a habitable fourth planet before using the name "Kentares."

I usually use Aplha Centauri for the closest, Wolf 359 for the next closest, and Sirius for the third. After that, I just default to the given names, though if a planet gains some importance it gets a new name.

The First couple of games I have played, I used Rokugan for the empire's name, and the clan names for systems (i.e. Doji, Akodo, etc.).
