Strange graphs?

In my last game (version 1.01) I had a huge tech advantage and decided to totally halt my research and start spending my money on military items. The next turns I saw the research graph take a deep dive to almost 0, while I am sure I still had all the best techs. I think the research graph shows how much each empire is spending, while it (imho) should show the technology levels of the various empires.

In the newsgroup I also read:

The military graph line is very misleading. It doesn't appear to take into
account ship strength but is merely based on fleet size.

Does anyone know if this is true? And is this intentionally?

Yeh, these graphs fooled me as well, they actually show how much of your resources you are commiting to an area of your economy relative to the AI empires. The only really useful one is population which shows the true ongoing picture, not the relative growth on a turn by turn basis. IMO these graphs are fairly useless apart from giving you a clue when an AI power is investing heavily in a certain development area.

Yeah the graphs should be an amalgan of future investments, and current assets.
For military it is the exact opposite to the tech, only your current ships count, if you churn out ships on all planets, the graph does not change a bit.
I also wonder about the "curency" graph, I think it only counts the normal tax income, leases and trade routes are not factored in. I agree these are not as secure as the taxes, but at least half of these amounts should factor into the stat.
Does anyone else get a strange "hickup" with the influence graph each time he opens a savegame? That is probably because the influence factors recent acievements additional to the current influence rating. So when there is no previous data it takes a deep dive for each race.

Hmmm I wonder why they did it this way. Can someone from stardock explain it? And is it possible to make the graphs more meaningfull? It would be a nice addon to the game in my very humble opinion.

"if you churn out ships on all planets, the graph does not change a bit."

Actually, it does -- the graph takes a turn or two to update, however.

But Ash: In your opionion (or anyone else who knows the answer), do the graps represent correctly the game status?

Want to bring that old thread up again because I agree about the science graph. The actual spending doesn't say anything - what the graph SHOULD display is hoe technological advenced the races are. The graph as to show me: That civ is on the same tech level like me, that one is in the stoneage etc. What it shows right now is quite useless.
Two ways two implement this:
1. Quite simple, the graph shows the number of technology each civs knows.
2. A bit more sophisticated, but still quite simple: The graph shows the sum of the research costs of all techs a race knows.

Would be a real improvment in my opinion... what to other players and the developers think about this?

I am fairly new to the game, but is it possible that you can only find out the actual tech level, etc. through espionage? I am not that familiar with that part of the game, so maybe it is not the case. Either way, the graphs are misleading.

You can find out relative tech ranking easily by checking out their stats. And you can always find the actually techs a person has by going to the dip screen.

The influence graph has already been discussed (dont' know where), but basically the stardockians said that when it gets loaded from a save game, the influence is recalculated over several turns, so it takes a while to show it's true value, because this is a complex calculation. In other words, this is a 'feature', as far as i can tell.

There could be one button to switch between actual spending graphs and total graphs. No?

Good idea, Gezz.
Should be not big deal to at and everybody could get the info he wants to see with on simple click.
