Windowed version stopping ?

Hi,

sofar I've run the full-screen version of GalCiv without problem.

Today I tried the windowed version and ran into a problem. First, my environment: WinXP Home, dual monitors using a Nvidia 4200 card, resolution 1152x864x16.

The game runs nicely in the windowed mode, but as soon as I switch to any other window and makes that window active, GalCiv stops running and doesn't start running again until I make the GalCiv window active again.

I'm fairly far into the gameand playing on Gigantic, so I was hoping to do some surfing while all my ships continue by autopilot, but that does not seem possible since the game stops when switching away.

Have I misunderstood how the windowed version is supposed to work, or is there something I should do to get it to run better ?

thanks in advance,
HuggOrmen

PS: I can't remember how this used to work in the OS/2 version, but I still have those five disks in my drawer :-)

Isn't it standard behavior for an app (a game, anyway) to stop running when you've relegated it to the background?

For most full screen apps, yes. The behavior for a window app various though...

Well, I have other apps and games (eg Tacops 4) that will happily continue to run in the background even while I'm IRCing in another window.

Are you saying this is the way Galciv is supposed to work?

I'm saying it depends on how they made the windowed version.

Some window apps, won't run unless they have focus. Some will run regardless.

Well, could someone please tell me if GalCiv is supposed to run or not while in windowed mode ? Looking at other comments, I see people saying they're running the windowed version while IRCing, which would indicate they're running them simultaneously ?

The Sims will also run in the background if you set it in the options.

if you like to do something else than looking like the 100 ships do their turns then install a multi-desktop tool like this:

http://www.freeware.de/Windows_XP/Tools_Utilities/Desktop/Sonstiges/Detail_Dexpot_Utility_fuer_virtuelle_Desktops_9530.html

run on desktop 1 galciv in activated mode and work on the other virtual desktops. with this tool you easy switch with "alt+1" & "alt+2" between game and work...

the game on desktop1 will run in background now...
