How can we protect our registration accounts from a GalCiv keygen?

I noticed that there is a keygen floating around for GalCiv, with people claiming to be able to register with SDC and download the updates so far. How can we protect ourselves from a keygen coming up with our codes? I am not sharing mine, and am encouraging those friends of mine who don't have the game to go to GoGamer and buy it, but I am concerned about someone coming up with my keygen randomly. How can Stardock know the difference between us and them, because IP addresses will differ.

Or does it relate to our login IDs and passwords, rendering already used registration codes invalid to pirates? *hopes*

As keygens keep getting released, I'm sure Frogboy and others will be looking at them and nullifying them with patches.
