Questions

These questions should be answered by the designer, brad wardell. At what Ai levels does the computer starts to cheat or get advantages over you? I'm playing on intellegent and find that the minor races are pumping out 1 colony ship per turn and the major civs built their first capital and constructors in a few turns from the beginning of the game. I think that they are cheating. And the second question is why do the game freeze everytime when I click exit? And last again, what's the smartest level for the ai to get no advantages over you nor cheat or in other words, at what level is a fair fight for both you and the AI? because on Alpha centauri, it's libarian. :) Thank you.

do the intellegence ratings do only the two things mentioned in the pinned thread? how can the minor race build 5 colony ships in 5 turns? How is that possible? going into a lot of debt?

I am assuming that you are playing the latest version of Galciv/AP downloadable with Stardock central

You might want to look at this thread for AI starting bonus http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=194613

How are you sure it is 1 per turn? But with proper spending and tech (100% spending, 100% military and republic governement), I can building a colony ship every two turns on Earth (and every 3 turns in january 2178). What is your galaxy setting? how many colonized planets are there in the system that produce 1 colony ship per turn. Is the new colony ship spotted in space or in orbit (where they tend to be before the launch)?
What is the caracterisitic of the minor world?

the major civs built their first capital and constructors in a few turns from the beginning of the game

Could you define few turns? Is it the economic capital (research path: comm theory, universal translator, trade) that cost 200 BC of social production? If the galxy size is small, AIs will meet themself fastly and the y can exchange tech. More they can also rushbuying social and military project.

BTW, to prevent savegame abuse, on each reload, AI have a diplomatic round and the opportunuity to rushbuy trade goods/wonder

difficult since :
- The AI get starting bonus at each level
- at low level, AI get less BC from economy than you. At higher level, they are more efficient than you.

but rushbuying costs money. Don't the AI start off with 1000 dollars just like you? And what do you mean by
difficult since :

?The capitals are economic and manufacturing. And for your link, what do all of the pluses mean? does it mean that the AI gets advantages over you even on the easiest intellegence level? The colony ships are outside the planet. Somehow the AI get way ahead of me in tech and they influenced everything and built starbases within a few years. How is this possible?

Did the expansion add any random events? the writer isn't picking them up. And I had to edit most of those event ethical values. The designer got a pretty slanted view.

what intellegence level is difficult?
The game does not cheat. I thought it did to until I learned how to play at Maso (All AI at Incredible). It only gets more difficult the higher you go in difficulty. You can adjust the intelligence levels in the set up screen. Start with every one at normal and see how you do. The game has a large learning curve. The are stratagies in the main forum and lots of hints and tips all over the main and empire forums. Speaking of empires, you should check them all out, and perhaps join one. Lots of good people in Meta.

so at intellegent the whole thing is balanced? what about all those pluses on that guy's link?

Well at intelligent, the AI get approximatively as no specific additionnal bonus in collecting taxes. And they have a reasonnable behavior in diplomacy.
But I don't know what balanced mean between a human an AI computer since there are some tricks (very useful at maso level) that really help the human and that the AI will never use

what about all those pluses on that guy's link?
End of quote

They exists, it is right. And sometimes, for low level AI, it is minus in diplomacy.
But you shouldn't bother about theses bonuses. Being able to correctly manage your colony (like 100% morale until a specific size is reached, see here http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GS&id=155077 ) is really important. As well as knowing what to build, what to research and how to get tech in trade with AI
:)

so the ai have advantages over you even on low levels? I'm now playing on normal AI with a medium galaxy and it's about 5 years into the game. I only have a few techs the ai dosen't have and they usually have more techs that I don't have and when the evil races declared war on me, all of my traderoutes are dead and some how one of them sent over a death knight. How is it possible that they built that in just a few years? Isn't that thing very expensive and hightech? About the random events, some are worth a lot more than they really should worth. And some worth a lot less. Like the plague one. It should have been a level 5 one.

I'm missing the progressive party in my selection. where is it?

And where I can learn which techs to research first and which production to hurry in the beginning of the game?

How to disable the thing that prevents save game abuses? It annoys me.

small advantages, but they don't take 10 picks like you at the beginning.

That it isn't few turns in my book. Few turns from the beginning corresponds generally to the early colonization phase.

I only have a few techs the ai dosen't have and they usually have more techs that I don't have
End of quote

You could always try to do some tech exchange to keep your tech level.

when the evil races declared war on me, all of my traderoutes are dead
End of quote

Yes, evil civ tend to prey on easy targets: civ with low military AND low economic rating

some how one of them sent over a death knight. How is it possible that they built that in just a few years
End of quote

Depends if the AI got some nice planets (sometinmes there are PQ 26 awaiting colonization), if they have lots of cash (gained with tribute from others race) and rushbuying military projects.

I'm missing the progressive party in my selection. where is it?
End of quote

I know that 2 parties were in the manual but were removed from the game

And where I can learn which techs to research first and which production to hurry in the beginning of the game?
End of quote

Take a look in the strategy forum. There are some beginner tips. And you may want to play at a lower difficult rate, just to learn the mechanism and teh way to be efficient with colonization, production, research ...
BTW, rushbuying is rarely a good idea, especially at the beginning. But if a social project is missing few Bc to be complete, it is viable.

How to disable the thing that prevents save game abuses? It annoys me.
End of quote

You can't. It is here to prevent some rushbuying of Trade goods/Wonder after a reload when you know that few turn later, the AI will build the project.

I'm no expert, but in playing, I've discovered the tech research paths depend on your own stategies and the type of picks and government you chose; the "best" path can be learned by just playing the first half hour, then starting again. Do that 10 times, and then you'll have a good idea of which techs to research; but! Never forget that you can get a huge number of techs from the AIs (especially from the minor AI players) by developing some of the manufacting techs and health techs before they do, then trading for the other techs you don't have yet. Required in that is finding the AI players very early so that you can talk to them for tech trading purposes (send scout ships out early). One of those minor AI is usually easy to swaps lots of techs with for only one tech offered in exchange; be sure one of your picks is diplomacy +60, err, of course... that makes trading tech as "good deals" for you much easier ;) Also, giving a minor a AI (one which you easily tech trade with) a "good" tech is a good idea. The others AI will trade with it when such same AI may have refused your same tech exchange proposals; then, you can swap with the minor AI for the various techs it acquires. I like giving a minor AI warp drive early or the manufacturing capital tech (plus other stuff like stellar research tech and heaths techs); that AI will generally get good techs in trade for those two techs (if you get those tech traded or given to the minor AI early as possible).

Lastly giving (gift) your main AI players a good solid tech for something will help keep them at peace with you longer if they are the opposite alignment; but if the same alignment, and you give a few techs and make friends, then they might give you battleship tech once you go to war (hopefully with a enemy AI a long ways away). You get the idea... perhaps stuff you already knew. Built 20, or so, low cost starfighters early to keep yourself looking strong so that the AIs don't think you're an easy target; trade for a few freighters as well (will save you time).

Honestly, I play at maso with no military and all AI set to evil. So I got sometimes the AI demanding tribute. I generally accept the demand. But sometimes I refuse (the relation drops) and give them something different (the relation improves). But when I become an economic giant with all AIs trading with me, the life is much more easy, with no demand of tribute :). I even get sometimes gifts from the AIs that want to keep me happy :)

I research medical techs like basic environment control first because I think that they corresponds to recycling tanks or energy banks in alpha centauri. Then I research Information tech and industrial tech. Is this a good strategy? I'm playing on medium map on normal.
Well, you should try the following:
Comm theory -> universal translator (to communicate with AI) -> diplomacy (to change governement)
Medical theory -> basic environnement control (for habitat improvement)
industrial theory
nanoelectronics -> stellar cartography (to know where yellow stars are located)
You can generally get trade with tech exchange. You cas safely reserach yellow and green tech, since they aren't in AI priority list.

And for social improvement, try the following soil enrichment (PQ) -> habitat improvement (PQ) -> bank center (eco) -> entertainment networks (morale). Using Governor for defining queue (Ford is the default for all planets) is useful to lessen burden.

Well, it is better to avoid being dragged into wars.
A busy AI is a nice trading partner: if they are all fighting themself, who will be the lucky one to get all freighter from them ? :)
You can bribe AI to attack weaker.

And AI tend to avoid to fight all civilizations. If they are dragged into war with the rest of the galaxy, they will make some peace.

Woops, mess my last post up...

Should say:

"Heh, get them on your side or get others to fight them so that they don't have the time to bother with you (i.e., make peace with you)... we agree, Peace Phoenix ;)
