Bigger and Better

The biggest thing that I got done today was modifying the star and planet placement code. I doubled the sector size from GalCiv1 (from 12 to 24 tiles across), and limited the number of stars per sector to 3 instead of 5. Each star can have up to 5 planets, and each planet cannot be further than 3 tiles away from the star.

Here's some screenshots:

I may have to tweak it a bit tomorrow depending on how Brad likes it. He also wants a system with Sol and Earth, so I'll have to add code in for that too.

The ships are deleted as soon as they explode now, but the battles still need some work: 2 simultaneous shots fired per ship, with different colors for different ships.

Beautiful! :) I really think Brad will be happy with the arrangement of planets this way. As for the work that needs to be done on the battles, I'll get you some different colored shots when I get in tomorrow morning.

Great work!

Yeah I really like it, great job. I was wondering how about other races, could they also have there own system?

I was just thinking it would be cool if each of the main races had a very cool looking home world /solar system. We could even take it even further if each of there planets where geared for a type of industry or something.

One thing I always liked about Moo/Moo2 was the planet "Orion" if some other alien worlds could give something like say "The Drengin Katrra Assault Cannon" which could be like the Best weapon in the game for close range, on the other side the Arceans could have the "Arcean Mythlar Gauss Cannon" For killer Ranged attacks and so on. We could even make those units be able to attack from a distance. Of course these weapons would have some really cool models/FX so when you saw them in the battlefield you would know. Oc course I don't have to code this, just a thought.

Looks really cool. It's a bit hard to spot some of the planets with the background stars. I'm sure that's either because it's a picture or will be tweaked. Do the planets spin as well as rotate around the star? That would be really cool!

Paul.

Yeah, each race can have their own home world.

So the home worlds of each race would be able to build a unique ship with unique abilities?

Paul: The planets spin, but they don't actually rotate around the star. They do have little moons that rotate around them, though. But you'll need to be able to click on the planets, so moving them would be a PITA for the player, and slightly less so for the AI's pathfinding. :)
