Economy and a question

I've only been at the game for a short while but of the few rounds that I've played, I *always* see that the AI has taken in nearly twice my economy and I am baffled at what I might be doing wrong.

Is economy solely a byproduct of population and trading posts or is there some other layer to it? And what exactly is a refinery supposed to do? I am unclear on whether it assists the normal metal/crystal harvesters or whether it sucks value out of the random debris that is floating around the edge of the gravity well.

Trading post/structures (whatever the name is) builds 4-5 trade ships that goes around you empire and collect gold much like the trade in AOE 1-3. Tho you still need a trading structure on the other planets for this to work.

The same goes to refineries. They go around, collect, and return. Gives you an economic boost ^^

The more you have of each, the more resources you get. And there might even be a few techs to increase overall performance

Yes, economy is solely population and trade posts, as well as planetary bonuses and (maybe? I haven't found one, but I'm assuming) an artifact or two.

Refineries go to other planets and come back with resources via the Deus Ex Machina method. They add little resources, though- in a recent game I had 4 planets totally filled with refineries (about 20), and 5 or 6 more splattered throughout my star system, to a total benefit of +3 to crystal and +2 to metal.

Um, refineries have a limit on them -- each mine can only serve 3 refineries. And while trade ports are map-wide, refineries only effect grav wells within 1 jump of their position.

some of the asteroid's have a 20% trade bonus and theres a couple ive had with 50% bonus to metal extraction or crystal. sometimes you get the trade bonus aswell as the mining bonus on the same asteroid
