Sins of a Solar Empire: INVASION is an addon project aiming to expand upon the existing universe of the Sins of a Solar Empire, providing original and high-quality content on top of the original game. Aside from the new content, the addon will also include multiplayer-friendly gameplay changes as well as reworked or new visuals/sounds.

Planned changes/content will include:

  •  A new playable race, created to the highest quality standards. The Xin are a race of utterly alien origin, and the massive fleets of their living, semi-sentient ships have been ravaging the galaxy for millenia. Countless races have perished under their onslaught - and now TEC, Advent and the Vasari will have to face this terrible enemy and win - or die trying.
    Assume the role of the defenders and try to stem the tide of death and destruction, or take command of the invading armada and destroy the impertinent insects wherever they choose to make their last stand. 
  • Volumetric Explosions & Damage Effects, providing not only greater excitement to your space battles by transforming all explosions and persistent damage effect into true 3D affairs, but also better visual cues as to how the battle is going, enabling you to spot at a first glance the hotspots and even the level of damage on particular ships.
  • Dynamic Battle System, where each ship class' strenghts and uses are not determined only by its stats and abilities, but also by its flight characteristics. Certain ship classes will be able to move during fleet battles, which, coupled with the reworked stats of all ship classes should prevent "cookie-cutter" or "spam" strategies.
  • New Ship Classes for the new faction, ranging from specialist ships such as the Warmaster or Emperor Battlecruiser all the way to Titans acting as mobile superweapons capable of facing down an entire fleet on their own or even destroying an entire gravity well in one powerful surge.
  • Reworked Balancing, aiming to further focus various ship classes on their roles, removing any overlapping advantages which ultimately make one ship type or the other the ship to produce. Changes will also include increased gravity wells as well as greater class difference in turning rates and top speeds in order to further accentualize fleet placement, strategic positioning of forward bases and other such details which a great admiral make.
  • New Planet Types, which will also be visually enhanced, primarily by increasing their size in order to make them a true centerpiece of a given sector. New planet types will provide greater variety without providing game-breaking advantages to players.
  • Enlarged Gravity Wells which, coupled with the dynamic nature of space combat, will challenge players to an even greater level, requiring careful placements of planetary defenses and orbital structures, as well as fleets.
  • Unique Structures for the new faction, ranging from formidable Heavy Defense Batteries to deployable Outposts which will be capable of guarding even sectors around otherwise uninhabitable astronomical bodies such as stars or gas giants.

Loger, as I said, squid-like aliens are my prime candidate. In fact, unless a better alternative is presented, I'll probably start working on the model by the end of the week. It's a high-quality character model so I'll need to spend quite some time on it.

Makbar, all three are good places to start, though most beginners pick 3DMax, perhaps because of its price (I believe its the cheapest of the three), perhaps because it is relatively easy to understand. Personally, I would go with XSI. The user interface and controls are much more fluid and its packed with nifty little time-savers, and it has a broader support for animation. Though I can't be sure the new versions of 3DMax aren't the same - last version I worked with was 6 I think. Or was it 4...

There is a free XSI awaialble at the its site dont know if it has less features coz iv not seen the paid version...

Hey wat bout a transparent squid with a big brain... a little shiny and a little transparent skin wud look cool...:)

I'm currently using XSI mod tool 6..downloaded from the main site and personnaly...I don't see any problems with it! Like ManShOOter said, it's fluid, quite simple (though it has a HUGE learning curve) and produces high quality models!

I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to start in the modding! But then again...knowing I started using it extensively 3 days ago...who am I to give advice :)

sorry for all these posts but i would like to contribute a story to this creature( the one i didn't draw)  anyway, so the way they move about the ships is that they have suckers and a ton(like 90 or somthing) teticles, and thet they grab on the the side of the walls and pull to propel themselves forward.  their large shell contains a large brain and they can communicate through clicks and warbles sent thrugh the water. they have spider like mandibles under the head, which has extremely efficient eyes.  they also have a small capability to use telepethy to paralyze and confuse prey. once again manshooter, this is not my drawing, so you dont have to give me credit to use it, but if you use the description here i wouldnt mind some credit, its just not required :grin:

Anyway i still think the Xin shud me smaller in size... like a 7 foot long squid... blueish in colour, big creatures r known for their brains.. and the xin i guess r supposed to b smart beings tht create super ships they dont rely on their ground strength....

Hey i was wonderin bout the defences of the remnants?? r they goin to b low on armour like their ships?? and wat bout the speed of the their ships?? triple tht of the Xin?? and double than normal factions??

Considering Xin ships are filled with water (awesome idea!) When they explode are you going to have crystallized water in the explosion?

Well, the heat of the splosion would vaporise much water but the water would still be there, its not just going to disappear. The extreme coldness of space would certainly freeze the vapor and thus ICE CRYSTALS!

Yeah, Xsi Mod tool is great for beginners, because its free and also because it has all the features you need at first. After all, its not like you're goint to be messing around with animation, compositing and GI renders... ;)

Gamerking, I don't really like the Nautilus concept (I know you didn't draw it, just saying)... the shell makes it look too much like a snail, despite the tentacles. A squid is still at the top of the list as it combines the alien look with a predatory feel. But I'm still open to suggestions! :)

Admiral_Kiernyc, Xin explosions are going to be different, yes. I don't know if there is going to be any crystallized water in them as the ships explode in a superheated ball of blue-hot plasma, so I assume any water in it would be instantly evaporated. The current drone explosion has sort of very complex light glowing threads  expanding and fading rapidly in the aftermath of the initial blast. Though I expect I'll make it look much better for release. If you like my Volumetric Explosions mini-mod, you shouldn't be dissapointed. ;)
