How do i get NPC Ally to defend/attack enemies in my home planet?

I notice that some planets give me the option of making my Ally attack or defend that planet. Although i dont seem to have this option on my own planet which is currently being attacked...

I need help from my NPC Ally, how do i tell him to save me?

You need to have the allied units selected before you use the ally commands :) You won't see them otherwise.

Highlight the ally units and you will see where you normally issue commands three commands, attack, defend and I think stop. Just click on the one you want and send them to where you want them to go. Though it has been my experience that they take their own sweet time in forming a fleet and heading there so I would not bank on their timely arrival to turn the battle.
