Ship upgrades, experience, and variety

About how many different types of ships will Sins feature per team? I've heard the game compared to Supreme Commander, and one serious problem I had with that game was the over-specializaion of units. Are there so many units in Sins that the units are all specialized? I know there are different classes of ships (frigates, cap ships, and smaller ones as well), and I assume there are different types of units within these classes, but just how many different units are we going to be dealing with? One of the reasons I want to play this game is that I absolutely loved Homeworld 2, and I think that game struck the perfect balance with number of units and versatility of those ships.
I know technology upgrades will play a role in the game, but just how important are they? If I compare a non-researched capital ship and a fully-upgraded capital ship, how noticeable (visually and otherwise) will the differences be?
Finally, I heard something about unit experience playing a role. How important will this be in comparison to technology upgrades?
Thanks for reading all this (assuming you did), I know it's a lot of words!
