Fighter spams feasible?

They worked in EAW

In 'Star Wars: Empire at war'I was experimenting a bit and found that, coupled with the hero in an X-wing and his ability that instantly blew up a hard point/small ship through shields, an enormous spam of X wings with as many squads as I could make would inevitably swarm star destroyers and completely demolish them within a few seconds. (even if they had shields up, it still wouldnt take long) and the same applies for space stations  :SURPRISED:

My question is this: Is it feasible to just build hundreds of fighters (or if they are in carriers, the carriers themselves) and swamp the opposition?

Another is this: Do anti-fighter frigates (like a flak frigate) do area of effect damage? as in could their shots hit a small area's worth of fighters?

Sorry if this has been asked before, I had to ask or id forget.

currently combined fighter/bomber swarms are rather effective mid game, as you can almost completely wipe out an enemy with something that very few people have heavy defenses against.

however the devs have announced multiple plans to ramp up anti-fighter defenses to keep such a spam strategy from being viable, suggestions include making the AA AoE, lightening fighter and bomber shields or making the AA super powerful and/or fast

although there are concerns about what each strategy might do to balance everything else, it would be rather redundant to make anti fighter AAs only to find that spamming 50 anti air frigates makes an indomptable AoE-spike attack.

Brings back nostalgia for the days in beta 2 when you could build unlimited sovas and bury the other guy in 200+ bomber squads before they could react... *sniff* Yeah, fighters are still pretty potent, but they should be balanced now.
