Feature Request: Show/Hide Dock Improvements

I find myself in need of showing and hiding the dock a lot. One (or both) of the following two solutions would be nice to have:
1) A keyboard shortcut that toggles showing and hiding the dock.
2) To be able to remove the default space between program icons and running tasks, or be able to assign a function to that space. I currently have a show/hide icon on my dock, but I changed the default image to a clear icon image. I put it next to the default (clear) spacer, but found that I couldn't remove the spacer. It would be nice if I could do something with that extra space or get rid of it altogether.
