Can't get WB6 to install

- keeps saying it needs to reboot

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate and have Stardock Central installed. It tells me WindowBlinds 6 - version 6.01.22 - is available to install. When I install it, it tells me I have to reboot. When I reboot and start up WB6, it once again tells me I have to reboot.

In small print, it says I should uninstall, turn off all my registry and protection and re-install. I'm not very familiar with Vista yet, so I'm not sure what I should be turning off. I turned off Windows Defender and the firewall, but that didn't seem to have any effect.

Help???

Thanks!
Brian

That's strange, sometimes security programs will get in the way. I would open SDC uninstall WB's and reboot. Open back up SDC go to tools, then setting and then internet and click on refresh XML data, and then reinstall WB's. Come back and let us know if the worked. If it did remember to true back on your securtiy programs.

No effect.

I uninstalled WB6 and rebooted.
I verified that everything under Windows Defender, Windows Firewall, and in the Security Center was turned off.
I refreshed the XML data.
I reinstalled WB6 and rebooted.
Immediately on reboot it tells me to reboot.
I reboot one more time (just for giggles), then try to start WB6.
Same error message comes up.

Is there something else in Vista Ultimate I don't know about that I need to turn off?

Brian Paige I wouldn't think that Vista would cause a problem for downloading WB. Is this 32bit or 64bit?

32-bit to the best of my knowledge.

I even just tried the beta version of WB6 - that didn't help either.

I don't use Vista so can't be alot of help here. I went into the Chat room and left a message. Someone will come along with the answer. You could try uninstalling SDC and going to the web site and downloading it again, but I would hold off and wait and see if someone stops by.

Just FYI....

uninstalled WB6
Cleaned up all registry references to it, as well as the WindowBlinds directory under Program Files\Stardock
installed WB5 (again, just for giggles)
same result.

Going to uninstall WB5 now and sit......patiently....and see if anyone comes to my rescue......

Brian, open up SDC and see if you have show pre-release checked if you do uncheck it and try downloading WB6 again. That has caused some problems in the past.

Did it both ways - regular versions and beta/pre-release. No change.

Well unfortunately the only thing left is to try my other sugguestion of uninstall SDC and going to the web page and do a fresh install of it. Other than that I guess your left with emailing support@stardock.com. Folks in the chat room were not able to come up with anything else either.  :NOTSURE:

Completely uninstall Windowblinds paid/trial versions.

Close SDC.

Go to your SDC icon shortcut or the executable and right-click on it then select "run as administrator".

Once SDC opens, install Windowblinds and follow the on-screen directions (reboot).

KiloKrash thanks for stopping by, not being a Vista user I was at a loss as what to suggest.  ;)

I'll give that a shot. It'll probably be Monday before I can let you know if it worked or not.

Thanks!!!!

No problem Brian.

Tried it over the weekend - no change. I still get the 'need to reboot' message when I try to start WB6.

I did the uninstall, but maybe I have to do a full manual 'cleanup' after the uninstall as well? I will try that tonight and let you know - unless someone has a different suggestion?

Thank you both again!!

Well hate to say it Brian but it looks like if that doesn't work you will need to email support@stardock.com. When you do be sure to link to this post. the should be able to get you past your problems. Really sorry we couldn't come up with the solution. (:(

No problemo. I appreciate the efforts from everyone.

I did email support - but I know they're not back until Wednesday. I didn't link to this post, though. What do I do - just cut-and-paste the web address, or does Stardock have some slick way of pointing to a post?

What I would do Brian is just click on the address to this post, copy it and then paste into your message. I'm sure there is a way to put a link in a message, I don't know how though.  (:(

Turn off 'Auto Archive' in SDC.

Still no go, turn off UAC and try the install: WWW Link - Scenario 3

I think I've tried with Auto Archive both on and off, but I'll double-check.

What's UAC?

What's UAC?

User Account Control (UAC) is a new security component in Windows Vista. UAC enables users to perform common tasks as non-administrators, called standard users in Windows Vista, and as administrators without having to switch users, log off, or use Run As. A standard user account is synonymous with a user account in Windows XP. User accounts that are members of the local Administrators group will run most applications as a standard user. By separating user and administrator functions while enabling productivity, UAC is an important enhancement for Windows Vista.

Yrag's link tells you all about it. Try his third option disabling the UAC. Its the 3rd scenario in the link he gave you.

I am having exactly the same problem although I am running XP Home. I have been running WB for years without problems and now this. Done all the normal uninstalls and reinstalls and allows me to run after install but on rebooting I get the same message as BrianPaige.
