Tactical Battles in near future...

I know this has been non discussble issue whn DL came out and devs said that they wont include it any time soon, maybe GC3 or later. But with all these awsome advancments in expansions and super cool patches, is it realistic to hope there will be mega cool expansion introducing tactical battles???

Maybe Stardock should make a Galactic Civilization Battles game some point in the future?

Given the types of weapons and defenses in GalCiv, tactical battles won't add much to game play, in my opinion. The A.I. basically focuses firepower on the weakest ship until destroyed, rinse, repeat. Not much you can do to improve tactically. There are no topigraphical considerations as in say, a civil war battle game. It's open space, so you shoot and shoot until something goes blewwy.

You may be harkening back to the tactical battles in Moo2, which were a lot of fun. The main difference here is that in Moo2 the weapons were so different that they had to be played tactically to be used effectively. For instance, the statis weapons which froze enemy ships while the battle raged around them, or the cool weapon that inflicted damage by spinning a ship out of control. These types of weapons require specific tactical decicions to use effectively, since they were usually a part of mixed fleets with each type of ship performing a unique function as part of the overall battle plan.

In my opinion one of the reasons the gameplay and AI is so good in the Galciv2 series is that the devs know when to leave a feature out. There have numerous instances of features that even Brad admitted would be awesome but he would not put into the game. The reason? Simple, the AI would not be able to properly utilise it and that would compromise the quality and integrity of the game.

While it is clear that brad rocks the Casbah at AI programming, I think that a large part of why AI in other games sucks so bad is that too many developers insist on throwing in features that thier AI cannot handle. So while I eagerly await tacticle battles and carriers and planetary units I will happily wait until they can be implemented properly... even if that means waiting for GalCiv3.

AAh but simple tactical ground combat would work!!
Or at least throw a few variables such as using the most abundant terrain type on a planet to label it as x terrain then having to train soldiers in that particilar terrain type or the current exotic world configuration.Say to have a decent advantage to invade an ice planet you would have to do research on that invasion tech. And have particular worlds negate certain invasion perks using different invasion methods.

Think about the headache that having differentiated soldiers would become. You'd have to have some sort of way to track which of your billions of citizen soldiers are which, some way to control which ones you load into a transport etc. While some kind of elite troop type sounds fun in practice, it wouldn't really work too well in Galactic Civ II.
