tutorial

Hey guys. I have played many RTS's including all the Homeworld series.I just purchased Sins and it looks quite promising. I have to say though that I have been pawing it around for a couple of days on and off, trying the tutorial scenarios and I find it difficult to pick up. I realise it is unique but I find for me anyway that the way in which the tutorial is laid out leaves something to be desired. An example is basic movement tutorial where you are required to destroy all the ships befor being allowed to progress, or end for that matter. I have completed destroying everything yet there is ne indication I am done or if there is another phase to the tutorial. In the homeworld series I was able to jump right in and begin the single player campaign as it is laid out as a kind of tutorial, spoon feeding you what you need to know without even feeling like a tutorial.
I went through all the scenarios of the tutorial a few times and I have yet to be able to confidently progress to the single player area.

I think that first tutorial is bugged. I just quit it and started the next one. Fight against an easy AI the first time and you'll be fine by just experimenting. But yes, that one could definitely be improved.

Is there some form or "guide"in text form that I could read through for the time being?

Eh, closest thing to it is my (now abandoned) manual thread. About the only really important thing in the tutorial is that you can right-click on the move / attack orders to cycle through some AI options -- attack controls the agressiveness (they won't move, they'll engage anything in roughly 1/4 of the grav well, or they'll engage the entire gravity well) and move controls if ships jump as a group or not.

I supposed I was looking for advice in setting up the economy and so forth.

The devs haven't really worked on the ingame tutorial for a long time because stuff keeps changing. Until it becomes finalized, we're probably not going to have a decent in-game tutorial.

As for advice in setting up economy, it's hard to make a guide for it because it depends on a lot of things Size of the map, your strategy, your opponent (in MP anyway). Generally you should try to aim for at least 2 trade stations (on different planets, obviously) as early as you can, and keep expanding based on your needs A lot of it is experimentation, there's no one way of doing it, really.

Population is your main source of credits so the more population you have the better.

Same with metal, and crystal. The more worlds you control the more metal, and crystal resource you acquire. You can research upgrades to this to acquire more faster.

As what was said much depends on what map you are playing. Going for trade ports early is usually a solid plan to get your economy going.

Dont forget to improve your newly colonized worlds, because they drain your income until you improve them. I usually do at least 1 population, and 1 logistics upgrade in the beginning.

If you start running low on metal, and crystal. Research refinery's, and build a couple.

Thnx guys. I played as suggested on easy setting and learned a ton. A few questions though. I see your level of research is limited by the number of labs you build. When it. Do all you labs add up to the total , eg if it says it requires 5 labs to learn something will all the labs I have built go towards the 5? Is there a way of quickly looking to see how many labs I have built? I still am somewhat confused with the interface that is on the upper left or the pips I believe they call it. Great game though and I love the way it is a bit like homeworld and Civ games mixed. I was bummed a bit by only the 2 dimensional travel but I see it doesn't make alot of difference. Just I enjoyed in homeworld attacking from all angles.

you can attack from all angles using the tilde (~) key, but as you said, it really isnt very useful

you can see the number of labs by looking in the top left of the research screen, it has a separate number for military and civilian stations

End of quote

Don't neglect the civ techs that increase the rate of metal/crystal mining. It may not seem like much, but when you have 10 planets and each gets improved by even 10%, it adds up.

The Vasari mining techs are a lot more convenient, since they combine crystal/metal mining into one tech, while the TEC have to research two separate lines.

3d movement control was simplified in beta 4. You can now hold down the movement key (d) when you issue a move order and you can adjust the z-offset with the mouse.

You could load some of the replays that are posted and see what experienced people choose to do, but I can't remember where they are.

*plugs Multi's site*

He has a pretty good collection of replays, but note not all of them are beta 4 compatible!
