I tried as well. I THINK this is what is going on:

The description says 1 parsec/turn (and they really mean a light year -> 1 space).

What it really is is 10% increase, which means you need a speed of IIRC 3 minimum to see the increase.

If it's really supposed to be only 10-20%, that is a HORRIBLE deal compared to anything else you could buy for 4 or 8 race bonus points? :( You'd have to have a ship at speed 5 to even get a +1 (with the +20 parsec %) 8/10 points) or speed 10 to get a measly +1 (with the 4 point +1 parsec %). Can you ever GET to speed 10? If this is really how it is supposed to be, they need to lower it to only 1 or 2 points. :(

Speed at the start of a game is a huge advantage

IN what way? It only benefits scouts. Your colony ships and survey ships are still stuck at 2 per turn!

for speed enhancing techs, +10% = 1 extra square per turn ( impulse drives for instance ). i would assume the starting ability follows the same rule. so this is probably a bug. i'm sure it'll be fixed promptly. apparently some other starting abilities don't show up either. it's in the bugs thread.

cheers

+1 speed at the start of the game (assuming it actually worked) would be fantastically powerful. The benefit isn't so great with survey/colony ships or whatnot, but the benefit is incredible with Transports. Effectively you will be able to fight wars twice as fast.

What about +1 Range? That doesnt seem to work either and the description uses parsecs when I think they mean sectors.

I noticed this too. I put the three points in for better starting speed, but my colony ships and survey ships still move at their basic speeds.

I assumed that it would increase their speed by 1.

I figured the +1 would be a big edge, but that's also why I figured it cost so much to get.

Confused.

It even sais +1 or +2 parsecs per turn in the text that describes the ability. For as much as those abilities cost, they need to do more than 10-20%, because even at 20% for EIGHT points, you would not see any benefit until a given ship could move at 5 parsecs a turn (because they seem to round everything down). With the +1 bonus, a ship would have to be able to move TEN squares a turn before it got any bonus. Can a ship ever even move that fast in this game (mine never have)?!?

Can some DEV please give us an official word about whether this problem is a bug and if so when it will be fixed? If it's not a bug, can you please change the text to something that makes it more clear what the ability does?

Once you get Impulse drives you'll notice it.

Soulfire:

In a long game, your ships will become fast with tech. I played a looong game in a gigantic galaxy, and in the end I think all my ships had at least 10 moves per turn. That's with no race bonus - just tech after tech, and trade goods.

Still, crossing the galaxy took forever :(

You shouldn't need to get Impulse Drives to realize the benefit of something you spent 4-8pts for.

This thread is now irrelevent. Latest patch FIXES it. :)

latest patch says it's changed from a percent to an absolute number of squares.
