Perceived Strength

I am clearly more powerful than every other Race, but they all treat me like I am a pansy!

Is the AI's perception of my might based mainly on the number of ships I have? I ask this because the Yor seem to think that they are the Big Bully, but have two Battleships and about forty Star Fighters. I have 10 Battleships, a few Corvette and a few Battleaxes. My fleet could crush them, but every time I speak to them in the Diplomacy Screen I have to say, "Even though you could crush us like a bug...."

Perhaps an algorithm that takes into account the total attack/defense/HP of your military, in addition to StarBase Bonuses (I have five fully loaded military resource bases) would give a better estimate of compared military force.

how far have you studied diplomacy? It's not just guns and butter but how you say it also counts, On the diplomacy screen the middle button will tell you what they think of us. If they have no respect for your diplomacy skills, they will diss you to no end ;) The farther you go in diplomacy the more you can get out of them (like peace treaty with them handing over planets) hope this helps

I'm not really referring to my ability to negotiate with the AI. It is more along the lines of them thinking they can push me around because of superior military numbers. For example, the Torians, who have fewer worlds, fewer people, but more Starfighters, keep threatening me and demanding tribute. I assume they would only do this if they thought I would be intimidated. I have a fleet, however, that would annihilate them. So I guess my issue is just with the AIs' perception of my strength.

Alot of the perception seems to be also related to the level of your diplimatic skills - as per what midnight states. Even if your military is strong, if your diplomacy sux, then the AI thinks that they can push you around. Research a several Diplomacy projects and you'll find a complete change in AI attitude - well I did anyway.

That makes sense, I guess I was mislead by the statement that my Diplomat makes when first requesting part of a trade that says, "Even though you could crush us like a bug..." I thought they meant that in a military sense. I didn't realize they meant that they could Negotiate me like a bug ;)

Most of the messages on the diplomacy screen are purely governed by your Diplomacy rating, but that one specifically is related to your military power. Measured by fleet strength, I think, which doesn't necessarily match your actual military capability when you're fleet is mostly high-end ships.

Hey, if they're too rude, make them a counter-offer they can't refuse. If that doesn't stop them, knock off a couple of their systems and THEN make them a counter-offer they can't refuse!

I mean sometimes stupidity is just fatal...
