Crash on Trade screen

I've recently come across a CTD bug that happens on both DL and DA which didn't used to happen on previous versions. I am using the current non beta version of the game. Whenever I try to access the Trade screen before I have researched the trade ability, everything just turns black. For DL the program crashes and I get sent back to Windows. On DA it's even worse as I get back to windows in about 16 color mode, and then my monitor just shuts off and I have to reboot. A workaround to this is to make sure I don't click Trade before researching the skill, but it still shouldn't be happening. Here is the DA debug file. Any suggestions?

Your video driver is having problems (the repeated "Error flipping back buffer to primary buffer." messages). Try updating to the latest available for your card on nvidia.com.

Hi there,

Thanks for the quick reply. I had done a driver update only a few months ago so didn't think it would be that, but I have had a few minor errors with other games too. I have done a fresh install of the latest drivers and so far so good. I wondered what that repeating error message was...

The big nVidia fix was early this year with an update in August I think it was. I might be wrong about the date but if your nVidia drivers say anything less than 2007 you will almost certainly have troubles with multiple software titles, not just ours.

Hmm, well if it happens in both DL and DA, this might not help, but you could try disabling the mixed vertex processing from the Options menu in DA.

Updating to the latest drivers seems to have fixed the problem, I haven't encountered any further CTDs. Another issue is causing me grief with Dark Avatar though, something not present in Dread Lords. It happens whenever I encounter a ship I haven't seen before. For example, I meet the Drath for the first time, or I see an Altarian colony ship for the first time. When this happens, whenever that "new" ship is on the screen, the game slows down to a crawl. If I scroll the screen so that the ship is out of view, or I zoom out to the icon level, it runs perfectly smoothly. But for the rest of the session, going back to the troublesome ship will cause the game to slow down badly again. The funny thing is that if I save the game, quit out and reload, I can now happily view that ship without slowdown, along with everything else on the map I have discovered. But once I see a unique ship again the same thing happens! Any suggestions on this? I have a few ideas of my own:
1. DA has so much more variety in terms of unique ship pieces, asteroids etc that my system simply can't handle a huge system with 8 races.
2. I installed DA quite a long time ago but have only just got around to playing it, I'm wondering if perhaps the files were archived/compressed at some point so that now when they are being accessed for the first time the system has allocated low priority to the files and this is causing slow down.
3. Time for a windows reinstall or a new computer. Gradual oddities have been creeping into the system for a while now and various games aren't quite performing to the standard I was getting six months ago.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have tried tinkering with the various video options and that hasn't seemed to help. I have greatly reduced the unique planet surfaces slider which seems to have helped the general frame rate, but not this problem.

Just want to further clarify this problem. I first encountered the slowdown effect after building my first asteroid base next to my home planet. This makes me think it's something to do with the archived files or something, because obviously that was very early on in the game and as such there was nothing happening to tax my system.
Or perhaps something wrong with my system memory? Somehow loading new textures completely cripples the frame rate.

Your video drivers are a year old, and your audio drivers are over four years old. I can't say with any kind of certainty that either one of these are causing you problems, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to upgrade them.

Wipe your hard drive and reinstall Windows. There is a lot of crud that creeps into your system; there isn't much you can do about it, it is simply a function of the way the OS was written. You will be surprised at how much better your system functions. BTW, don't forget to backup your important files.

Very old driver. A driver update is in order, if there is a newer one available.

Not the correct driver for your particular monitor. Install the correct driver.

Sometimes 'mixed vertex processing' can cause conflicts - disable it.

Driver Date: 6/3/2003 07:12:14
4 year old audio drivers.
Check for an updated version.

The 'whole lot of these' indicate that you really need to update your video drivers - at the very least.

I have actually upgraded the video driver since posting the original debug file, they are now current as of September 2007, so that shouldn't be the problem. Good point though about the other drivers, I will have to look up some new ones.
