Do ships always hit each other?

Might just be me, but do ships always hit each other? Also, is there any actual mathematical process for ship size vs' chances to hit etc? I like the idea of cruisers escorted by fighters with the idea being the smaller more agile ships can avoid the concetrated fire, making small and fast a viable tactical approach?

There is no hit/miss chance, though attacks can roll 0 (if the attacker has no luck ability bonuses, anyway) and defenses can absorb hits completely if they're strong enough.

Dont want to create new thread to ask this, so I'll ask here.
In DL version 1.5 (from Gold Edition) how does damage mechanics work. Is it like in DA: one shot per each gun you have on ship or like in early DL: all guns damage sum up to single shot?

The latest version of DL still uses the DL method.

Speed doesn't factor into combat. The concept of agility doesn't exist in Galactic Civilizations because weapons are too advanced for that. Hit chances are determined by AttackRoll - DefenseRoll. Wrong-type defenses roll from 0 to square root of the defense, rounded down to nearest perfect square. Priority of targeting in fleets is determined by this formula:

Priority = TotalAttack / (TotalDefense + HitPoints)

where the higher number for Priority equates to higher priority, obviously.
