Cultural Victory Broken?

I'm playing my first full game, and I have had all but one sector of a small galaxy culturally dominated (my color) for like 3 years now and still have not won. Is this broken or is there something I am misunderstanding? :notsure:

You need 90% of the influence points. Just because it is your color doesn't mean you have 100% of the influence in that sector. There is a button in the upper bar that gives you details of the sector you have selected on the minimap. Chances are that your opponent(s) still are influencing sectors on the edges of your space.

Cultural victory works. It sort of crept up on me when I was just messing around on a tiny map.

When I check the victory condition progress towards cultural victory, it has said "12mts" for like three years. What does that mean?

It definitely works. When you are getting close a message will appear telling you something like, if the current trends continue humanity will win a cultural victory in X turns/months.

Well it did not seem to work in that game. I had ownership of every sector, 90%+ of the cultural influence of at least 90% of the sectors, I hel that advantage for several years (not turns) waiting for the win, and still I ended up having to conquer every last planet before it let me win. :(

Does anybody know what eh "12mts" means next to the cultural victory progress screen (by saved games)?

I've had the exact same experience in two different games. I played on a small map, and I had cultural dominance of all but 1 or 2 sectors for several years and could never achieve a cultural victory. The victory progress screen shows 12 mts after you get 90% of the sectors, but then you go for far more than 12 mts go by without winning.

It seems that other people have won cultural victories, so it must work sometimes. It just seems impossible to know when our how close you are.

I'm completely frustrated with the cultural victory. I plan on going for other victory conditions until there is a fix for the cultural victory. (I do, however, still love the game!)

My games was a small galaxy too. I wonder if the culture code is only flawed on small galaxies?

Are you at war with anyone?

I have a question. When I click on the influence tab on the minimap, most of the map goes to a black background while some is a light blue. Now I thought this map was going to change color to show my influence, which was at 80%. So is black the players color?

Light blue (cyan, technically) should be the Altarians... dark blue should be the player. It's a very dark blue, though... dark enough that from the wrong angle it looks black on my monitor. :)

"Are you at war with anyone?"

Can you not win a cultural victory while at war?

Yea Brad is right. I was playing on easy difficulty with just me and the Tor on a medium map. I could not get cultural dominance because the Tor were in my way... so I picked a fight. After I took one of the planets that was in my way (actually 3 planets) I accepted a peace treaty (for all of their money)and my cultural influence spread the rest of the way.

It didn't start my countdown until after the peace treaty.

I know I'm playing on easy but the strategies are coming clear. I'm ramping up slowly. ;)

I got my cultural victory 12 months after vanquishing the Arcaens (oops..spelling..the green beastly neutral
fellows) in a war. So I was not at war and after i
vanquished them, i had the bottom half of the galaxy
under my control and culture and some areas in the populated top areas with other races as well..lots of
cultural improvements too...

I won on a large galaxy map.

btw..the game ran fine on my pii400 256 meg machine :)

I believe they have made two changes to the cultural victory that are not reflected in the manual:
1. At least on the small map (the only one I've played so far) you need cultural dominance of 90% of the sectors, not 7/8ths.

2. You have to maintain cultural dominance for 2 or more years (not sure exactly how long) before it starts counting down the months to victory. There also seems to be a bug here because the Victory Status screen goes to "12 mts" as soon as you achieve dominance of 90% of the sectors, but it just stays frozen at 12 months for a couple of years. However, it does eventually start counting down.
