Ship improvements question

When you research a new tech for your ships (weapons, defences) where and when does it show up on the consruct ship screen? I am up to shields level 2 and do not see it on the info, and only beam weapons appear even though I have researched lasers. On ships already built, do I have to upgrade them to get the new tech?

Lasers ARE beam weapons.

For the rest, in the ship builder you have several tabs on the upper left side. IIRC Hull, Extras, Engines, Weapons, Defenses... Click on the tab and you shall see available components. On some tabs you have subcategories (weapons: beam, mass, missiles). If you have highlighted one category, are other two hidden. Just click on the highlighted one to deselect it and show all.

Thank you..I feel so stupid. I am really trying to get into this game. These forums are much more helpfull than the game manual. Now to go out and blast a few things!
