Installing GC and DA from old files

and it's not working...

I recently switched from Vista to XP, and I kept a copy of the game files from the Vista install (ie, copied the whole GC2 folder onto an external drive, installed XP, and then copied the folder back). Is there a way to get SDC to see the existing install and do its validation thing? I've tried setting the install path for GC2 to C:\Games\, as well as C:\Games\GC2 (with the latter being where the game files are located) but it just doesn't seem to see the files - there's a box labelled 'Install' next to the game files.

Is there a way to get this going, or do I have to re-download the game?

SDC bases what games it can 'see' on the registry entries, not the files themselves. Unfortunately you can only get a full and proper set of registry entries by a real installation, since those include your serial and such.

If you find yourself looking at needing to preserve the game across an OS reinstall again in the future, check out SDC's archive option. That's the only way to properly preserve everything without needing to redownload.

Hooray!

Sorry, my comment really doesn't apply to your issue. But I have to applaud your choice of migration direction because it reinforces my own personal opinion of Vista.

Darn, thanks Kryo.

Had I installed the 32 bit version I might have stayed, but I needed signed 64bit drivers to mount an ext3 partition. That combined with a crashed Halo2 game damaging (ie, things in 3D mode weren't displaying correctly, massive framerate drop in all 3D apps) my drivers, and I had enough. Now that I'm back on XP I find the UI to be much less intrusive and space intensive.
