NewBee Needs some help.

What is a .efw and what do I do with it?

This all started a week ago when I stumbled upon a website call ThemeXP. Then while surfing for more custom items I stumble upon XPThemes and Stardock. When I seen the work that people were doing here I hit the floor. Totally awesome. Wiping the tears from my face I decided the other place was a waste of time and this is where I need to be. So long story short, I found a few themes I liked, Downloaded them then learned I needed program to load them up, downloaded that and still can't get to the themes. i.e. I downloaded windowblinds5_public.1.2D0D17.efw. Suppose to be the trail version of WindowBlinds. I'm stuck. What do I do guys? All of the trail versions For the Object Desktop that I have downloaded are *.efw. Couple of zip files that contain *.desktop. Any help would bb great.

Welcome MayorJim. Could start just overloading you with so much information that you head would spin and your eyes bug out!

The best place for you right now is hit the link. It will take you to the WinCustomize WiKi. Great place for you to get started. It explains the programs and has tutorials. Spend some time there, even print pages, but by all means add it to your browsers favorites list so you can refer to often, and you will.

Where are you downloading those files from?  You can get the trial version of WindowBlinds from here.

http://www.download.com/WindowBlinds/3000-2326_4-10705323.html

You can also check out the WinCustomize Download Guide that tells you what software you need for the downloads here.

Also, you might want to read "changing your desktop themes" for an introduction of what some of the applications do.

This from http://www.fileinfo.net

Compressed .ZIP file renamed by CA Security Centre to have a ".efw" extension; typically applies to e-mail attachments scanned by Computer Associates (CA) antivirus software

ah... found it at fileinfo.net

File Type Renamed Zip File
Category Compressed Files
Common? No
File Description Compressed .ZIP file renamed by CA Security Centre to have a ".efw" extension; typically applies to e-mail attachments scanned by Computer Associates (CA) antivirus software.

EFW files may be opened by changing the file extension to ".zip" and opening the file with a decompression utility, such as WinZip or Stuffit Expander.

NOTE: Do not open unknown e-mail attachments from non-trusted sources, as they may contain viruses or other malicious programs.

Thanks everybody. Turns out that my CA Antivirus renamed the files from .exe to .efw. By renaming the file with the exe I was able to unzip the files and use them. Although I am quite frustrated over having to use so many programs to run one desktop theme. So I think I'll stick with my SytleXP for now. Alot cheaper also. And easier to download extras. Thanks again.
