Serious Boot Problem Need Help

Started yesterday. XP Pro. During boot, system/task tray and desktop icons begin to blink on and off (5 secs on--1 sec off) This continues for 30 minutes and then stops (sometimes). Also during blink, the focus on my typing is changed and I have to use my cursor to get it back ...heck of a problem typing this...

I have run virus and spyware such as Norton, Uniblue Spy Eraser, WebRoot Spy sweeper numerous times. Scanned,cleaned and optimized registry... Nothing works... Need some helpful suggestion. On verge of complete wipe and reformat... geez I hate thinking of reloading all this software....

Reloading all the software is one approach.

Since this is something new that just has happened, did you load any new software, updates or change any settings?

I would atleast try a restore to a previous date that you feel the computer was working okay. If that doesn't work and you haven't changed you computer in any way I would try booting up in safe mood and select last known good configuration (I think that's how you get to it).

If I'm wrong someone will come by and correct me. A complete wipe and reformat should be your last option. Keep us updated.

Thanks for the reply... I felt like I had tried the last know good boot, but I will go back and give it a try.
