I think that a lot more people would think twice about committing crime if the punishment was public. If the execution was public, people might have a bigger fear of it. If people were publicly humiliated for smaller crimes (like having to wear a "I'm a shoplifter" jacket in public) they might not think that the small crimes were "OK". How about chain gangs? People really didn't like those. If we brought those back, I doubt that anyone would want to go to prison (can you see Martha Stewart in a chain gang?) But, as time has gone on, we have given many "rights" to prisoners. It used to be that you lost your rights when you were incarcerated, but I think now most of them live better than a lot of the "honest" population. We should make the prisoners build houses and prepare meals for the masses on welfare. They can all sleep in barracks (it's good enough for our military, so it must be good enough for prisoners...) so that there is more room to establish shelters. Make the prisoners produce goods so that they can be sold to pay for their food while they are in jail. Everyone complains about government spending on welfare- what about the amount of money that is spent on all the jerks in jail?
