problem with XP operating system

Hey,
If anyone could help me with this i would be most grateful. the problem i am having is that when i am using my home laptop it will shut down for no reason. now it shuts down after about five minutes everytime i try to use it. the caps lock will light up before it shuts down. has anyone ever heard of this before? will i just have to bite the bullet and rebuild the machine?

You say "shuts down" but that really isn't saying much.

Are you seeing any errors on your screen when this happens.

Does it just power out/black out/go into sleep mode?

Is this a new or old laptop?
Is this possibly a power issue, is the laptop running on battery or outlet power when this happens.

Also have you tried running the winxp laptop in safe mode to determine if this is a problem with the operating system or a hardware failure of some sort. To run winxp in safe mode, reboot the laptop and hit the f8 function key on your keyboard repeatedly during bootup until you get a startup options menu, select safe mode (or choose safe mode with networking if you need an internet connection while you're testing this) from the list and winxp will bootup into safe mode. After logging into your machine, let it be for 5 min and wait for it to power down.

While you're watching it, observe any error messages, note any popup windows that appear, etc.

Need more of a detailed description of what's going on to better help you with your problem.
